Some 16 yr old child graduates from college. Some professional magicians are considered poor performers. The number of years seems meaningless. We shouldn't forget one of the most important things we were always taught "what was the effect on the audience". That's all that counts. Some people are natural speakers
before an audience, most are not. Some can convincingly perform a simple effect for an audience with only a brief practice time. That's a special gift. Most of us have to work much harder. These are my thoughts after being involved for 66 yrs. |

Boy, Ron, you really started something.
I've been performing for 42 years, and I'm still not any good. Jim |

I agree with everyone who says that the amount of time we've been practicing doesn't mean we're better or worse magicians. And that only strengthens the point I was trying to make in my original post in this discussion. There's no need to lie about it. But I do understand why we might feel the need. Like I said, I was once like that too. I fell into it when I started going to magic conventions and meeting other magicians. Because I was a new face my mind felt I shouldn't tell them I was new to magic. So I'd say things like, "I've been practicing for about 10 years" when in reality I started just a couple of years ago. I think it's that feeling of not wanting to feel like a being viewed as new" feeling and wanting to fit in with the "big boys".
But I learned since then that it doesn't matter how long I've been practicing. It only matters how I treat the people I meet and the effort I put into what I do. Imagine for a moment that I never marketed some of the tricks that I have. Outsmokin, Bill burner, VCR and all them aren't known tricks. Some guy shows up at a magic convention and performs those tricks. When they ask how long he's been into magic he says, "Oh, a couple of years". I think that would be more impressive in a way then lying and saying he was in for 10 years. (Note, I only mentioned my own tricks to make that point because I didn't want to drag anyone else's name into the discussion. ) I have a definate moment in my life that tells me when I first got into magic. In 3 months it'll be 20 years. I won't go into detail but if you read my bio on my site about my brother you'll know what I mean. That happened 20 years ago yesturday. Ron Jaxon |

I started when I was around 10. I sneaked into the adult section of the library and took out a book about Houdini, luckily my Father'e cousin was tje librarian and she let me take it home. I practiced with cards for a few years. At 16 I left home and joined the air force. I stopped my practice in favour of boozing, chasing women and going to foreign climes.
In 1993 I was hospitalised for 6 months and started messing with packs of cards. This lasted until I went back to work. In 2001 I was on holiday in the US when I saw a street magician, my wife said "You used to all that stuff". When I returned home I found that there was a magic shop very near to where I lived, went there and thanks to Dave, the owner, I rediscovered my love of, and respect for, magic.

Let's see, hmmmmm 52 years so far, I figure with a couple more weeks practice I might be passable too.
"Now here's the man with the 25 cent hands, that two bit magician..."

About 31-32 years....with some gaps. I got a magic kit when I was about 9 or 10. Learned a very basic cups and balls routine, the professor's nightmare, a nested boxes trick using bags instead of boxes and some other stuff.....I was hooked.
I spent most of my money on individual tricks.....and packet card trick. I bought "Now You See it, Now You Don't" and the sequel. I picked up most of the basic sleights....for 20 plus years the cups and balls was just about the only pure, ungaffed routine I performed, however. Now I take the complete opposite approach to magic. I've been into pure coin sleight of hand for about 5-6, but I didn't move beyond Bobo's book until about two years ago....A lot of great stuff has come out in the fifty years since Bobo wrote the "bible" of coin magic...I don't know if I'll ever "catch up"....I not sure it's even possible to keep up with every thing that is coming out.

I've been into magic ever since I left the womb. I think that the world is magical all by itself. The effects and sleights are just icing on the cake.

I had a Paul Daniels magic set given when I was about 8 years old and after a few years amazing my family with a Svengali, marked cards and packet tricks it fizzled out from my mind and drifted back to my Lego, so where was the Magic Café! I'm sure I would never have lost interest if I had found this place back then.
ah so.. I could answer 25 years.. but no, I say around 2.5 years Jason. |
