Does anyone perform Roger Klause's effect called "Whisper"?
If so what venues have you used it in and do you have any handling tips or bits of business to share?

Yes I perform it.
You can use it in any close up venue anywhere you have a spectator. This is one of those effects that can be done standing with no tables, no angle problems, and its magic using a spectator. As for my handling tips - my tip is to read the beautifully done instruction book and perform exactly as read |

Agreed. Klause is a master of routine construction--one of the examples I aspire to when routining my own stuff. IMO, his handling is virtually impossible to improve.

If you're not that coordinated don't do it over cement. I dropped mine and it broke. It can be fixed esaily but I've never got around to it.

If you are not that coordinated, don't do any coin magic over cement. Coins don't like being dropped on cement.

Hmmm... could this work with Canadian coins?

Yes you could, however the gaff included with the set uses US quarters and a Penny.
The book that comes with the routine tells you how the gaff is made and who you can get to machine out one of the coins you would need (its Todd Lassen) - but others could do it if needed. |

I had Todd Lassen make me a custom gimmick using Canadian coins. (Although these days, I'd probably ask Roy Kueppers to do it, merely because Roy is Canadian. Todd Lassen certainly did an excellent job with the custom gimmick.)
I formerly ran a site of links to help Canadian magicians, magicinfo.ca, but I retired it in 2022.

Great trick, and Roger is a seasoned pro, so his approach reflects his experience. You might want to look at some of the other versions of this effect and see which style best suits you.
There are two versions by Al Baker, Don Alan has an excellent presentation, Bert Allerton should be considered. Obviously worthwhile is the Liepzig handling in Stars of Magic, Scotty York marketed Nickle Saver, his apparently impromptu version and the list goes on. The ones I've mentioned are versions I have tried in shows. All of them have one or more points that are peculiar to them and that recommend them as a worthwhile effort. What you finally settle on is a subjective and very personal matter, but the research and experimentation is better than half the fun, so happy hunting... Best, PSC

OK, you caught my attention. Could someone please explain the effect?

This is a version of the “Cap and Pence” trick:
With Whisper a dollar bill that is been rolled into a cone and parked on the spectators thumb. Then a US penny is placed on a stack of six quarters (may be borrowed). The coin stack is placed on the back of a spectator’s hand (you even hear the faint clink of the coins as it is placed—thus the name Whisper) and the dollar bill cone is then placed over the stack. With a bit of magic the quarters drop, one at a time, through the spectator’s hand onto the table or into their other hand. The dollar cone is lifted and there is the penny resting on the back of the hand, every thing is examined right about here. Good start point for learning this effect. Don’t overlook any of the other versions mentioned by Mr. Chosse above.

I prefer the Johnson gimmick as the stack "moves" lending credibility that it's the borrowed coins. I carry this with 'em everywhere!!!

I use the Don Alan routine. I have a set made up in silver dollars, but have not used. PM if interested in purchase.

Whisper is a powerful coin penetration effect, and I think what sets it apart is that it focuses solely on the penetration. Roger states in the instruction booklet that the other coinstack-type gaffs usually end up with a penetration and a production of a stack of smaller coins (dimes or pennies). He makes a valid point that the secondary production effect detracts from the primary penetration effect, which can be confusing for the spectator (too many things happening at once).
This is not the case for Whisper as it focuses solely on the visual, audible, and tactile penetration of the quarters. Also, the instruction booklet has excellent pointers on handling and subtle touches for a very realistic effect. By the way, the gaff is custom-made by Todd Lassen himself (what more can you ask for in a coin gaff?). |

Good effect, standard quarter stack will not work. It made me learn the Vernon Bill Fold which I use all the time now for standard stack too. It's worth the money for Whisper though, the reaction is good.

Once you've purchased Whisper, if you preferred to use a stack that moves, you can always fill the Johnson model with a piece of sponge, leaving room for a penny. You could also glue a magnet to the inside top of the stack; this enables the stack to stick to a magnet holdout on your back pocket or wherever.

Is the Vernon Bill Fold different than what is used in Whisper ?
