Just wondering how everyone else trains a number of doves? Do you spend an hour a day with each? That would mean half the day is spent on training them. I've only ever had three doves at one time, due to the dogs next door digging under our fence and breaking into the avairy, they were killed. I'm looking at getting more and was just wondering how people would go about training four doves? How long should be spent each day with each dove? Thanks.

James, when I first got into Dove magic, my mentor answered this question for me by saying "as much time as you can spare". It also depends on what your interpretation of training is. At one time, I had 31 fairly new birds and I spent 30 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes at night with a few of them. Next day I did the same with a few others and so forth until all had been worked with. Then I started over. It only took a few weeks to get them into shape. Then, just the rehearsal of may act several times a week was all that was required.
It isn't necessary to train every bird to do the fly back either. If you have a few that you can use as a substitute when necessary, that's all you need. Use the same bird for the same effect each time and you'll find training is much easier.

Thanks Dave. I wasn't planning to train them all to do the fly back, just basic training. The last doves that I owned were pretty much trained when I got them.
I started training one of them to do a fly back as is described in Tony Clarke's book, but I was never able to throw it out and it fly back. It would only fly from one hand to the other when I hold my hands apart about a metre and a bit. I did everything as is described in the book. Are their any more tips anyone has to train a dove for the fly back? Thanks again Dave for your input. James |

I've found Tony Clark's method of return flight to be very effective, but it requires a daily committment for months. I was able to train one bird to return without having to use a spot light. He returned even in a brightly lit living room. I do think that some of the success of return flight depends on the dove as well: his/her attentiveness and personality. Speaking of this...here's a question for everyone: what's the shortest time it has taken you to train a dove for return flight?

Oh my god....i know what I did wrong. I didn't use a spotlight in any part of the training. Maybe next time I try it I might use a spotlight for the initial stages of the training. Christopher, your right with the personality thing as well. I've had a fair few pets and individuals respond differently no matter how much effort you put in.
Now I just have to find a spotlight. Any ideas of what kind of shops sell them? Thanks heaps everyone. James |

Hi James - it sounds silly, but I used...a flashlight! It was terrible, but I guess it worked. But I remember doing most of the training in a brightly lit room.

You can find the clip on light holders at most any hardware store. Put a spotlight bulb in it and clip it on to a back of a chair etc.

Buy yourself an old slide projector from a yard sale. Use it as the spot light. In the old days (prior to the mid 80s) I worked many a nightclub and hotel ballroom show where that is all there was. (Replacement lamps are cheap. Watch eBay.)
