Where can I learn about the black art concept and how it is used? specifically like a base an illusion rests on.

There is a user here who writes books about it although his name escapes me right now.

Also you may want to check out the book/tape by Ralph Adams. He had some great concepts of using black art with no special lighting.

You need special light to use a black art base?

Well, not actually special light but special lighting. With BA its all in the lighting and the quality of the BA material. There is a special section here about black art, "The deceptive side of magic", check it out.

Definitely contact Dondrake and Gary Darwin. They are the only two that have the most information on this and they are the best.

I think he may be refering to the use of the black art prinical in the t**n base. Velvet and felt are often used in between "steps" or on bevels of various t**n bases. These bases do not usually require any special lighting or back drops. This black art is only used to create demensional illusion. Check out some clasic books on illusions. Woodbury, Steinmeyer, Osbourne etc.
