Are they planning to re-release Rules of Thumb in DVD format? I've always wanted these set but the fact that it is still in video format kinda turn me down.

The bill switch is pretty standard, ordinary bill switch. It's not great, but I've seen worse.
I like the one on the first Lonnie Chevrie dvd better though. Mark

I have Gary Darwin's TT dvd. It's a 3 set volumn dvd so you do get a lot of info and history of the great tt. For me, this dvd is very informative and I learn the proper technique(s) of using the tt. Gary is a great teacher and he has some very good stuff for using the tt in vanishing, coin production, and mentalism tricks. This dvd also comes with a free In Your Face Extreme tt that costs about 14 bucks on Penguin. So it is a great value and PenguinMagic did a great job filming and producing this dvd. I'd recommend this dvd to anyone who is serious about tt.

I liked the Patrick Page VHS tape on thumb tip magic.

I myself was disappointed by the dvds. For me the highlight was dai vernons kicker. the bill switch performed was shocking! I cannot believe that a layman would not be suspicious seeing that 1 performed.
I liked Darwins enthusiasm and the fact that he put a lot of material in it. I however feel the dvds should have been cheaper. I wish I had known about the rules of thumb dvd first. anyway, I'll check the Café before buying other products. Thanks Guys |

I always see this DVD on the Penguin site. it's $60 and I really like Gary darwin, but I never ordered. Today it shows as a cool box deal for only $20
http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/912 And they throw in something called the" In Your Face: The Extreme Close-up Worker's Thumb Tip (soft)". It shows it's $15. Has anyone ever ordered it that can comment ( Vernet being the gold standard ) It shows on the demo: http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/814 Thanks! |

Hi. I ordered this from Penguin a while back when they had the same special. The thumbtip is not bad quality, and the DVD is exceptional! He is VERY thorough. I think one HAS to buy this DVD just for one single effect he teaches. It seems Mr Gary Darwin is quite serious about this effect, but I think he also saw the humor in it. He uses a thumbtip to make actual dead cockroach parts form into a live, yes, live cochroach! It is just hilarious! You have to take your hat off to Mr Darwin for, I think, more than anyone on the planet, he has sat down and imagined every possible thing you could do with a thumbtip and crammed it into a DVD. The one thing he missed is how you might take a dead elephant, piece by tiny piece, and restore it to a living elephant, right from your fist. Maybe that will be the next thumb tip DVD series.
Seriously, though painfully thorough at times, it is really good. KJ PS: Inspiration from the "back to life cockroach": There is a "drop of blood" to live lady bug effect on the market that uses a totally different set of props, but I think the production of a live lady bug from a thumbtip might actually be a very good effect. |

I too was dissapointed in this DVD. While I did enjoy some of the novel effects, I found Darwin's TT handling mediocre at best. I remember the legendary Phil Thomas performing several TT effects with brilliance. Later, Mr. Thomas later revealed to me that his TT was bright red! I NEVER NOTICED! Nor did anyone else! Amazing.

Volume 2 explains the bill switch. It's the only effect worth it in the series. It was a gap in my magic education that was filled terrifically.
The rest is kinda lame. |

I was pleasantly surprised to see Darwin do the thumbtip silk vanish using the outer cover a matchbox! That is where I realised how good technique is as compared to the "realism" of the gimmick.

I'm definitely a newbie and am just starting to purchase DVD's and vids. In truth, this is the only DVD set I've purchased to date so I have no comparisons. That being said, I've found this to be extremely useful. Though the production quality is all over the place, the demonstrations and ideas have been invaluable. Mr. Darwin's stage personality is very vaudevillian and cornballish which gives a very retro feel on top of the demonstrations.
Most valuable technique on the DVD's that I've learned so far? TT version of The Miser's Dream.
