Hey all,
I've been trying to think up a method to the following effect: Mentalist removes a match from a matchbook, holds it at his fingertips and concentrates on it. After poping a blood vessel with concentration the match ignites. But I have a feeling this has probably been invented before? Does anyone know if it has and where I can find it? Thanks in Advance P.S. I'm not talking about the 300 dollar version that ignites an enitre matchbook.

Years ago I bought from DEVIL a self lightning match - it was electronic and each match had to prepared in a special non chemical manner.

Can't help you with lighting the match but how about this alternative handling which I performed back when I did magic and wore cheap suits.
Mentalist lights a match and after concentrating on it breifly the lit match erupts into a huge 3' flame. You can prepare the necessary something at home. PM me if you're interested.

The best method for this effect is to use chemicals (won't mention on this open forum) one of which is pretty easy to come by and the other is not so easy in this day and age. If you want a non-chemical method then take a look at "Auto Match ic" by El Duce (sp?). This uses a hidden gimmick to ignite the match while at the finger tips. Also check out Phoenix issue 175 an effect called 'Pyromaniac' which has a clever method to reignite a match.

Robertson, in Auto Match ic, since it uses a hidden gimmick to ignite it, could you borrow the match? Thanks

The Auto-Light Match by Michael P. Lair will do what you want. It is the classic chemical method, ready packaged. Murphy's shows it discontinued, but some dealers may still have it in stock. Check out this Google link for some possible sources. If you are unable to find The Auto-Light Match, there are a few commercial products from Kymysitcal Magic and from Henry Mayol that are essentially the same thing you could look for.

I believe Michael Lair has a web site. He still sells magic and might have what you need.

TheNightBringer89,
The reset is not quick. And unless you measure out the materials given fairly well you'll have a bit of trouble getting it to work consistently. You may have better success using this method on an entire book of matches rather than just one wooden match. -George Tait |

Hmm ok, making a chemical approach then... seems like this may not be possible for strolling.

I'm not sure what they are selling, but I've had enough of the stuff since the mid-90s and still have enough to do for many years to come.
It uses a very small amount to light a match... about the size of a match head so it will take awhile to go through... if they give you a reasonable amount. Greg

If you guys are patient, I have an interesting approach to this that I would like to someday release.
Basically, you BORROW a book of matches, and with a little bit of concentration, the entire book BURSTS into flames! Standard-ish effect, but mine is completely practical for strolling, no reset, everything examinable, etc, etc, etc. As well, if you were so inclined (and I don't reccommend it) the matchbook could burst into flames while held by the SPECTATOR! I'm not sure how Sean does it, but that's basically my presentation using these chemicals so it has to be my own matchbook, but it's examineable after they burst into flames.
Greg Sean, I'm also curious if you've come up with a similar "device" idea that I've been trying to put together for years, but I'm not technically inclined. I'm interested to see it once you put it out. Greg
