I am just starting to explore this area of entertainment. I have the Axtell Magic Drawing Board and hve been using the Axtrax CD's. I want to learn to be a ventriloquist. I have an Axtell Puppet on it's way to my home. I was hoping to get some recommendations from some of you on the best teaching resource available. I have heard about Steve Taylor's videos and Maher Studios Course. I'm sure there are other good ones out there too. Can you guys give me some much needed advice. I will appreciate any help you can offer. Thanks.
Regan

Maher Studios has a ventriloquism course which costs $99 (I think). It is available in their website.
Just buy that course, spend one month on them and you will be good. |

Thanks Joseph. You relly think I can learn to be a good ventriloquist in only a month? Man if you are right, I would be pleased. If the Maher course could do that for me I would buy it.
Someone is offering it with a different video now. I can't remember what it is called but there is an option to buy the Maher course package with someone else's video substituted in. Do you know anything about that? Thanks, Regan

The package that you are referring to includes the video - 'Ventriloquism 101' by Lee Cornell.
It's a very good video, Lee goes into a fair amount of detail on the video and demonstrates using a number of his own puppets. His lip control is other worldly. You can check it all out at this link - http://www.cornellpublications.com/ventriloquism/ Cheers Billy |

Regan,
I suggest you buy all the instructional materials you can afford. Study them all and use what seems best to you. I also suggest you look at Pete Michaels' Video Vetriloquism at http://www.petemichaels.com. He gives suggestions that you really won't find anywhere else. I got his video after I already was doing Vent for a year, but his explanations seem really good and really easy. Oliver |

Thanks Billy and Oliver.
Billy, which video would you suggest getting to start out? "Ventriloquism 101", or the Maher video that comes with the standard package? Regan

If choosing between the 2 videos, 'Ventriloquism 101' would definitely be my choice.
The video that comes with the Maher course doesn't spend as much time on the techniques as does the Vent 101 video. However, I think the Maher course itself is a really wonderful way to learn. It's definitely been the best method of learning for me. The course not only disects and teaches all the techniques but it also goes into things like script and joke writing, costuming and even the choice of figures. Apart from all of that, it is written in a very motivating and inspiring way. I don't think you'd regret purchasing the Maher course. Having said that, if I was going to purchase the Maher course now, I'd probably go for the one that includes Ventriloquism 101. Hope that is helpful. Cheers Billy |

It is very helpful Billy. That is just what I wanted to know.
Do you think it would be helpful to have both videos? Regan

Just for the record.
Maher Studios offer a new course, which they call Millennium Edition. This latest edition include Mark Wade's video plus several improvement. Before this edition, they sell the course with 3 audio tapes, plus optional video by Steve Chaney (sp?). As Oliver said, I suggest you buy all the instructional materials you can afford. Then practice, practice and practice. Regards, Budi Ha Ha |

Thanks Budi. I am glad to know that you are ok.
Where can you buy the Millenium Edition? I didn't see it on their website. Regan

I would definitely agree, get all the resources you can.
The Millenium Edition is available for $99.95 at this link - http://www.maherstudios.com/course.aspx or you can get the Millenium edition plus Ventriloquism 101 for $89.95 at this link - http://www.cornellpublications.com/ventriloquism/ You'll need to scroll down a bit on the second link, look for 'Package #2'. Cheers Billy |

Thanks Billy,
What is the difference between the basic edition and the Millenium Edition? Can you purchase the video from Maher or the "Ventriloquism 101" video by itself? My reason for asking is that I would like to have the course and maybe have both videos...since I can never make up my mind! Regan

Regan,
I must agree with Budi and Billy about eh maher course. I used it years ago and the information is fantastic. I did not get the video as it was before it was offered. I am now looking into them to order myself. I have been out of vent due to my day job but recently placed my order for a figure from Tim Sleberg and plan on getting back into Vent and enjoying this fun art once again. Please keep us posted as to your progress. Sincerely, Chris Johnson |

Mister Mystery ,
Maher Studies is a great place to get vent stuff. Another thibg I have deal with the people since 1970 and they are very honest . Ventriloqism is a fine art ,just give yourself time to develop ,and goes easy on the voice at firt you can lose it. I have all of maher courses startijng in the 70 , and they are all geat. Soft firgures are the going things with small children , but I use hard ones with old kids. Hope you will have as much fun with vent as I have had since I was 14. Great name by the way,. My vent name is Al Nelson . If you have any problem with the lessons. Please feel free to let me know . I had two great teachers Bill Boley and Paul Stadleman. |
