Nine bizarre effects are described in the January 2005 Genii. Not taught, mind you, but described -- as they comprise my ongoing show, "Supernatural Chicago."
Eugene Burger wrote the feature-length review, so you know it's written from an insider's perspective. Happy reading -- and don't rip me off Best, Neil P.S. To see the show with your own eyes (instead of Burger's), reserve your tickets at http://www.SupernaturalChicago.com

Neil, congrats for making it to Genii. Could you describe for the non-genii suscribers (and the people not living in Chicago) what your show is about and what kind of bizarre effects you do? That would be appreciated. Keep up the good work.

I understand what Neil said. This is nothing more that what you or I would be saying: Read about my show, just don't duplicate it without my permission. I, for one, would be ticked off if someone took my show and replicated it exactly effect for effect throughout without me giving an okay. That's just taking my efforts and originality and applying none for him(her)self. Dave |

If you want to find out what I do specifically, either visit Chicago (it's so crisp and lovely this time of year) or pick up the January 2005 issue of Genii via subscription or through your favorite brick-and-mortar magic shop. By the way, it's a sensational issue even without the review of my show: there's a riveting article about Sidney Radner's historic Houdini memorabilia auction, a cover story on Kalin & Jinger, an inspiring first-person National Geographic-meets-Magician article by David Groves, along with the usual great columns by Racherbaumer, Maven, Giobbi, etc. Best, Neil

Neil,
A trip to Chicago isn't in the Tarot cards for me in the near future, but I just subscribed to Genii and let them know I was looking forward to reading the article about your show. Thanks for letting us know! Yours, Paul |

Neil,
Congratulations on making Genii! I'm sure the article will be well worth the cover price alone. As I am in Chicago, I will do what I can to try to attend, but this is busy season for me as well. If nothing else, maybe we can get together for a cup of coffee or something, sometime. I'm up in Andersonville, so I'm not too far from your venue, either! Glad to hear it's working out well for you! I just got my copy of Genii last night. Congratulations on your coverage, Neil! Sounds like a really fun show. I love the "Play Chess With Death" photo.

Thanks for the coffee invitation, Lee. I'll be contacting you soon!
And thanks, Paul, for the kind words. Although not explained in Genii, the photo was from a performance art piece/publicity stunt I created and staged this past October, in which a friend of mine (dressed as the grim reaper) sat at a chessboard while I invited the lunchtime crowd in front of the James Thompson Center to give it a try. Participation was free, after all, and as my spiel would often intone, "It's all in good fun -- this time!" Winners received parchment certificates proclaiming "I Beat Death" (hand officiated by myself and Death), and were awarded discounted admission to my show. Several newspapers covered it; the Chicago Tribune even published a photo (not the one printed in Genii). When the weather turns warmer again, perhaps we'll do it again. Sorry you won't be visiting Chicago soon, Paul. But to everybody else reading this: if you're in the area or planning on visiting soon, do stop by http://www.SupernaturalChicago.com Best, Neil

Neil,
I just ran over to Hollywood Magic and picked up Genii (running into Billy McComb in the process!). I read the article and enjoyed Eugene's review/critique of your show, although I wish the feature had been larger or part of a larger Bizarre context instead of yet another page-o-rama on Kalin & Jinger. Kudos for getting the pages! I love the insight on the playing chess with Death, that sounds like a GREAT publicity piece! I was in Chicago in September and actually walked by your venue (It looks magnificent!) several times as I explored Chicago but unfortunately I wasn't there for the weekend. I regret missing it.

In Ingmar Bergman's "The Seventh Seal" (1957), a knight plays chess with Death.
This summary is from a website: This is the drama that made Bergman famous as one of the giants of world cinema. Set in 14th-century Europe, the film tells the tale of a disillusioned knight who returns home from the Crusades to find his native land ravaged by the plague. I can never forget the image of the knight delaying his own demise by playing chess with Death. But I think what makes this movie audacious is Bergman's theme: man's search for meaning in life in the context of death's inevitability. I sounds like Necromancer has made a clever use of this idea for publicity.

Bill,
There is an outrageous short film parody (The Duve) of Bergman's "Seventh Seal" in which the knight plays badminton with Death. A dove (the "Duve" of the title) splats death in the eye and the knight wins the match. The film is shot in fake Swedish, e.g., water is "aichto-oski." The costuming in Necromancer's publicity shot is a good match to the image from the Bergman film. A very clever idea, indeed. Yours, Paul |

Given the iconic status that Bergman's image of the chessplaying Reaper has attained over the past nearly half century, it seemed a natural for tribute (or parody).
Paul, I haven't seen Duve, but it sounds hilarious. And let's not forget the often overlooked but quite good, Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey (which includes the truly daring Twister With Death). Best, Neil Quote:
