Hey guys
I've just hit the stage in my magical journey where I've stopped being so interested in packet tricks and hype. With over 50 packet tricks now in my inventory, I am sick of wasting my $$$ on one time wonders for family and friends. I have not one book! Does anybody know of a few books that is directed towards creativity, performance and theatrical elements. Something that will help me understand how to stand out from the crowd, routine my act with my own style, to get my creative juices flowing and to create dramatic impact with my presentations? I really do want to get out of the habbit of buying tricks based on hype or with-out actually having a place for it in my routine first. That is the path of the lowest form of ameature magician. That is me. Book recconmendations to help me advance my hobby into a carrea.. Help anyone? Thanks in Advance Sam Griffin

Anything by Eugene Burger, Ken Weber's book, Maximum Entertainment, a little book by Jay Sankey, Beyond Secrets, ummmmm. . .there's a lot out there, these are my favorites at the moment though. Good luck.

I've read this question several times on the Café.
Performance is more important than anything else. If I understand the question corectly; you now only perform packet tricks, and believe, like many magicians, that learning theory, presentation, routine, and so forth will make you a far better performer. The question really is - have you anything to perform ! First you MUST learn the tricks, moves, and get used to performing them. Develop a personality and style. Etc. Only then can you start looking at "standing out from the crowd" or "create dramatic impact". If I have misread your question and you are a decent magician and need to add the final polish its worth pointing out that there are dozens of books out there, so unless they say the same thing, there is no magical formula. The books must be studied and worked on, not just read through. And, as above you must have an act first; even if you have to drop it ! You may do as well by working out your own ideas, how you move; the order of the moves; what you say, when and how; how you stand; we can go on forever - The books mentioned above are a good start, but please don't buy old, out of date books just because they are cheap. Its worth reading through good books on one particular magician because they usually include the why of the trick, as well as the how. For me - anything by Gary Kurtz. Eddie |
