I've been in the Mentalism field for over 20 years now. Aside from my billet routine, I have been doing Dunninger's 16 digit test, which is still gangbusters today. Here is my question. Some say "don't use a slate" others say "use the slate" Does it really matter ? Isn't it the effect that counts and not the props used? I made myself a small version of the "Dunninger-Baker" slate with the appropriate gimmick. In 22 years of using it, not once have I been questioned on it.
it's just a slate...right ? Comments, anyone, please ?

Personally I wouldn't use slates, but that's just me. If it works for you, then fine! I do not do any effects that need a slate, but I would prefer a white board. But if the slate has a logical use, such as a reenactment of an old spirit writing effect, I would use a slate.

Anyway, that's my two cents...

I am a firm believe that the props don't matter too much. The spectators will not go away saying "nice slates", or questioning them at all, if you handle them nonchalantly then they should be blown away by the predictions you make, the information you reveal etc.

That my opinion at least...my two quid

I wouldn't use slate because I think it's not a common prop at the 21st century ...

But maybe things that look a bit old fashioned are less suspicious for the audience.
I can imagine people saying or thinking "and he was only using a classic slate with chalk, like the ones we use to have at school in the good old days...he can't have cheated with that"

Just a matter of style.
Nothing else

If they suit you, then go for it.

I personally prefer slates as they suit my style :
they add theatrical value to MY presentation and a touch of mistery as well.

I found that white boards don't work well on stage as they reflect the light and cant be seen at the back of larger audiences? Anyone else?

Juan D, well said.

It is just a matter of style. What atmosphere are you trying to convey? Is is old, myserious, victorian perhaps? Is it new high tech? Is it just you in the "here and now"?

Many performers take little time (or no time whatsoever) considering what they are all about, what their image is or should be, or what they are trying to communicate.

Effects are there and will be. Interesting characters are more ellusive, and that's what this is all about.
