I have been doing this trick ever since I saw David Blaine do it. A magic friend of mine told me a method on how to do it but it involved pain. I do it sometimes with a large audience but what I wanna know is this the real method or is it a different method that doesn't involve piercing. Make up is not an option.

Why is make-up not an option? Basic prosthetics would enable you to carry out this effect...

Well can you explain how makeup would hide the fact of the string penatrating the stomach. david blaine did not use make up he had hair on his stomach. I think he used the method I use

The only method I'm familiar with is the one found in Swami Mantra by Sam Dalal pg. 99 entitled The Brahmo Thread Mystery. I'm only familiar with piercing and of course DB could've done it with some wonderful prosthetics as his TV producers have tons of cash to make it look great but my gut feeling (no pun intended) is he too used the piercing method. Just my two cents.....

Blaine absolutely used the method described by Sam Dalal. It is the "real" method. I have watched it performed and everything in his TV special indicates towards him using it. But to the audience, as long as it's presented right, any method can be used. Of course the swami mantra method will allow for the closest of scrutiny. The other method, prosthetics, in my opinion is too messy and doesn't allow room for real presentation to become the center of attention.

I do this effect also using the Swami Mantra method and having seen Blaine's version, it has to be similar. Seeing how the thread being pulled out tugs on his skin clearly tell me that he is using a method similar to the one listed in the S/M. The book would be a good place to start to learn to perform the effect.
I am a minister and love performing this effect, though I have yet to find a gospel presentation for it. Not that I have tried. Trust me, this is not one of the effects you stand in front of your congregation and do. I usually keep this one for small get togethers. I have performed it maybe twenty times and only once did I encounter a problem. It's not something that I want to do everyday, but it is a show stopper. This one always gets people talking. Belivee me, when they see you pull a string out of your stomach, they don't forget you. Allan |

Blaine did use prosthetics, I don't think there is anything wrong with it.

Just curious for all of those that are so insistent that DB used prosthetics....where did you get this information?

Hey -- Where are all the 'purists' when it comes to the heart out of the chest routine ?
Try making THIS one impromtu.

Well, I mentioned that because there were quite a few on here after it aired who believed he simply used the "psychic surgery" method.
oh, second "proof" about the string: if you are aware of the types of techniques he used on that special, why in the world would you think he would do that particular effect for real? s |

Because when Sam Dalal published that effect in 1975 (I think) I don't think he intended for it to be done with fake skin or whatever. The method to the effect is ballsy. Not everybody has the guts (no pun intended) to pull of the true method and not everybody can afford the going rate for a professional make-up artist to achieve the same effect. I bet this isn't something DB does on a daily basis and for the purist who perform it via the original method probally don't do this more than 2-3 times per week. Anyhow.....it is a very cool effect and I just don't feel that a prosthetic method is any good. That's my 2 cents.

I think DB used the Dalal method for the effect. I can't see any evidence at all that he used prosthetics. If anyone has ever really tried the Dalal method, I am sure they will attest as well as I can that it is not that big a deal to do. I have no problems whatsoever getting set up for this effect, and the only thing that would make me nervous would be to have a spectator take the string and give it a quick pull.
That makes my knees quiver just thinking about it. Allan |

(if you went to a costume/make-up shop and purchased the make-up, got alittle advice from the shop, and went home and experimented for a short while you could produce the desired look) I also would prefer the "real" method. It does not match the rest of his body. For one, it looks too shiny. I never said it was a "full" prosthetic, it just is not his skin. David did not perform these effects just once. They were done many times and the best takes/spectators used. I am sure I would rather go the "fake" route than the real several times a day or how many times over how many days it was shot. anyway, no more from me. |

Blaine did not need prosthetics, which would have only added to the production cost, to pull off the trick.
In my country, only fakirs have been doing this trick for many years now, long before Blaine did it on TV. Leo Manila, Philippines |

Hi to all of you,
Use the same method as in the needle thru arm. I gave it a try and the result is not bad. No makeup, no surgery and no pain... Have fun with the idea! Andre Le Magicien Quebec Canada Excuse my french...

I don't see how that would be possible cause you would have a line crease in ur stomach and that would be noticable without makeup

I tried out a method for this that involved make up and such and found it didn't work very well. I was wondering if any one has a method that does work. PM me if you do, I don't want your secret, just some advice.
