I have recently become interested in the various torn and restored newspaper effects. I have some of the top effects but am having one sort of major problem. The ink of the paper rubs off and covers my fingers to the point where if I did this in a show I would have to stop and wash my hands before moving to the next effect. In some cases I have gone to torn and restored magazines because they don't leave such a mess. Any ideas?

Thanks and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Learn to love dirty hands if you want to perform the effect. I have heard of some people spraying the paper to avoid the mess, though I have never tried it. I enjoy the effect so much that I accept the dirty hands... just remember not to touch your face afterwards. Smile

Hi Bob,

Go to your local art supply dealer and get ahold of spray fixative. Artists use this product to "seal" charcol and pastel chalk pieces. This should solve the problem.

I usually do the newspaper tear near the end of the show. Afterwards, I use a moist towelette to get rid of the grime.

You will find that some newspapers are worse than others about shedding ink.

Use color Tabloids. That ink will not rub off onto your fingers. Smile

If you can go small there's always the torn and retsored post-it.
In loving memory of Hughie Thomasson 1952-2007.

You brought something beautiful to this world, you touched my heart, my soul and my life. You will be greatly missed.

Until we meet again “my old friend”.

Can anyone recommend a good Torn & Restored Post-it routine? The above message is all that turned up when I did a search.
Thanks

Martin Lewis has a video released called un divided cigarette paper tear. If you use your magic skills I am sure you can use post-it paper as a substitute for a routine

There is a really nice Signed Torn and Restored Post-it Note in Richard Osterlind's Mind Mysteries Volume #4. In the same volume there is also an excellent Signed Torn and Restored Newspaper. I have been using the Torn and Restored Post-it Note for both walk around and small stand up shows. It plays great for all audiences and there is ABSOLUTELY NO ADVANCED PREPARATION. In fact some of my best performances have been with a borrowed post-it note pad. Osterlind has some great ideas that you will enjoy.

Have fun Walking Bob

I use the "No Tear torn and Restored Newspaper." Has much less actual handling of the paper and really doesn't leave a mess on the hands.

Get some blank newsprint... tell 'em you got your paper this morning and somehow the newspaper FORGOT TO PRINT YOUR COPY... "So I don't need it."

Tear up the pieces. Then say something like, "I'm getting a mental picture of the news... it sounds like (name the headline) ... WAIT... IT'S ALL COMING TO ME... "

Flash restore (Gene Anderson's is great for this) and take your bow.

This way all the handling and tearing is done with NO INK on the paper.

I haven't tried this, but I saw a TV program (about butlers) that suggested ironing the newspaper. The idea was that this sealed the ink onto the paper, but I haven't tried it so can't vouch for it.

A T&R effect that works for me is tearing a currency note and restoring that. The higher the value of the note the better. It takes a bit of time to tape the pieces together afterwards, but the effect is worth it for me. Tearing up money usually gets a good response from the customers.

Using one of the methods available to either duplicate the bill number or switch the note, you can actually "prove" the bill you restored is the one you tore into bits. This adds a good convincer that the restored bill isn't just a copy of the torn one.

Cheers

I do the Gene Anderson T & R as my finale. The beauty of the flash restoration is hard to compare. It's easy to wash after the show.

Use the 5 second torn & restored newspaper by John Bauer. You just need to set up once and use for many shows before you have to make another one. It convenience and it resets in no time. I have the instructional video tape if anyone want to trade. Please PM me.

Pete Biro suggests blank newsprint... Call your local newspaper and ask if they sell (or give away) end rolls. I've paid $5.00 and had more paper than I knew what to do with (lined the bird cage, paper for Sunday school art, cheap wrapping paper, plus any magical use I could think of.

It helps if you stress you are using the end roll to support some type of public service (it's also nice to actually perform some type of public service).

Pete, that Idea is great!! Smile

I was talking to a gentleman at a local magic shop inquiring of the same, which T&R did he use or recommend. He said he uses the Slydini T&R and found it to be best for him. I have Andersons book and ordered the Slydini version. Still not following the Slydini version to well. Still a work in progress.
