I don't know if this is the place to be posting this, but does anyone know where Copperfield keeps his mic? It's not on stage, because we couldn't here his assistants voices. Any suggestions welcome.

Copperfield's show is planned out every step and every breath.
His mic is most likely a body tone color that attached to his ear, which is very thin. The people he brings on stage are asked if they would like to help prior to the show.. Then they walk them through with what's going to happen. (They do not influence them to be a stooge.) Exception to this rule is for the folks who are picked my a toss of the brick into the audience are not prepared prior. The reason why you did not hear his helpers is they probably shut off the mic. When he wants them to respond they have an overhead mic that hangs down over the rafters. Same type of equipment they use for Broadway shows. Cheers Curtis Eugene Lovell II MagicofCurtis.com

Here's a question for you Curtis.
If the assistants are "stooges," then how would he have such perfect aim when he throws the frisbee in the audience? Thanks for the answer, Evan |

Actually, my sister was picked by Copperfield during a show. There was no pre-show arrangment. He just walked out and took her by the hand and brought her on stage.

Ditto...My cousin was picked for a Copperfield trick and so was I a few times. The only pre-plan that may go on is maybe his assistant will check with an older audience member if they're able to help out for a trick and if they want to so they're prepared. The frisbee related stuff like Evan said, is all random. That's what makes those tricks so impressive.

Actually there are several ways to ring in a stooge by throwing frisbees or beachballs into an auduience as DC does. Keep in mind that not every one that catches a ball needs to be a stooge. PM me if you want me to elaborate.
I was chosen for 13 and a friend was chosen for the car appearance in the same show neither one of us were stooges but you can see where they can easily be used in certain positions of certain illusions. |

Greetings... I have quoted myself so please re-read... Not every members is preselected just the ones who are "ASKED" to come onto the stage. They are preasked/preselected and marked with an orange dot on their shoulder... (When it is a beach ball etc those are usually randomly selective...) Please do not misstake me when they are preasked,, they are not turned into stooges.. they are usually are brief to whats what... Quote:

I ask a few ladies if they would like to help if need be, and I state :I do not want this to influrance you in any way of selections etc etc" Also I tell them "What ever I say no worries the trick is competley safe" etc.. This creates a better show... you get a volunteer who does want to help and usually much more fun.... Cheers Curtis Eugene Lovell II http://www.MagicofCurtis.com

Curtis I think you missed my point. What I am saying is the supposedly random choice of throwing frisbees etc. is exactly where a stooge can be run in. Also as Evan referred to earlier, they need not be perfect throws at all.

But those throws are not stooges. They are totally randomly selective. My friend next to me did the brick wall prodiction.

Curtis you are still missing the point. Trust me, theres a method to get stooges using the frisbee toss that is 100% fail proof . You could even throw them with a blind fold on!
I have PMed you write back if you wish. Scott |

All-the-rage in the magic & theatre worlds, and VERY expensive! The reason you don't hear his volunteers is that, since the mic is proportionately so much closer to David's mouth than to the spectator's, David's voice is proportionately much, much louder. You can find out MUCH more about this type of mic in the "FX" forum in the "Stage, Parlour & Platform" area, as well as at http://www.MagicRoadie.com. Cheers from Toronto!

Glad we got back to talking about mics. If someone was interested in purchasing such a mic where would be a credible source for such a thing. As well as the afformentioned stage mike.
Also, is it just an urban legend or does David have another mic on in which he gives instructions to stage hands and such. I seem to remember reading something about the tremendous preporation he goes through.

Back in the day, Copperfield and I used to hit the beach and play frisbee. That dude could hit me in the forehead everytime. Then we'd play frisbee.
Just funnin' |

In a recent conversation I was told he use an e-s shure microphone which is tan in color. It is an awesome little unit and looks like the same unit Lance Burton is using. They can be found for a reasonable cost at http://www.jacksmusicfactory.com

I am not familiar with the e-s shure microphone but if you are looking for a great mic the Countryman E6 is one of the best I have ever worked with. Many of the workers use them. Below is a description from the Countryman web site. The cost is up there but if quality is what you are looking for then you found it. I believe that just the mic is $514.60. Countryman will custom fit the cable for most wireless mic transmitters.
At this years FFFF convention I had the opportunity to use a Countryman mic from Gene Anderson and Dan Garrett. The experience changed my opinion of other mics and won me over. I do the lighting and sound at FFFF every year and next year we will use only the Countryman mics. The transmitters that I use are Nady UHF which are available through me. I use UHF transmitters because the VHF mics frequently pick up CB and walkie talkie chatter which is not the case with UHF. "Description erfect on stage or in church, Isomax EarSets are the answer when you need the highest possible sound quality without the bulk and appearance of conventional headsets. Light and springy, Isomax EarSets clip around your ear, not around your head. They never interfere with your hairstyle, headphones or hat. Isomax EarSets are available in four colors, Light Beige, Tan, Cocoa, and Black to blend with the user's appearance. The E6 is supplied with your choice of cables that attach to the EarSet with a snap-on connector. Choose the 1 mm diameter cable for minimum visibility or our exclusive DuraMax 2 mm cable for unmatched life. A wide variety of connectors can be attached at the factory making Isomax EarSets instantly compatible with any mix board or wireless microphone transmitter." Take care and take cards Antony Gerard |

Hi Antony,
I had meant to type E-6 and somehow E-S came out. As I mentioned before you may want to check out Jack's shop. I have never met the man, although he used to be a magician. The link: http://www.jacksmusicfactory.com/default.asp?productid=1591 has the E6io listed at just $300 including shipping. Its wired for Shure but for a small fee ($10.00) he too will modify it to fit you Nady. Nice to hear FFFF is getting them for next year. Lapel mic's leave a lot to be desired. Did Stephen Bargatzee show you how he used a rubberband to hold it in place rather that using tape? It's awesome! Cheers, Shawn |

Hi Shawn
I don't know how he can sell them for only $300.00 because the Countryman web site has them listed at $514.60. If he can sell them for $300.00 he has a new customer. Thank for the tip and hope to see you at FFFF next year. As I said at FFFF I enjoyed you show. I have a number of pictures of you on my FFFF photo web site but because of my schedule the past two months I have not been able to get all of the captions and credits up yet. This month is a slow month for me so I should be able to finish the site in the next couple of weeks. Remember the dates are April 26, 27, 28, and 29, of 2006. As for the mics at FFFF this year. You said: "Nice to hear FFFF is getting them for next year. Lapel mic's leave a lot to be desired." I agree 100% and I did have ear mics with me but because they had an ear bud attached the back stage crew refused to use them because they were afraid someone might catch something? Next year with the Countryman mics that won't be a problem and the performers will be given the option to use them or not. And yes I did see Stephen's creation with the bands. He never ceases to amaze me. Take care and take cards Antony Gerard |
