What are your favorite types of audiences? Mine are young women. I usually get the best reactions from them. And, of course, the obvoius reason What audience do enjoy preforming for the most? With who do you get the best reactions?

College sororities and college orientation shows. The first confirms my belief in deity - I get locked in a room, alone, with 200-300 college co-eds, most of whom want to get hypnotized!
The second is that, when I do an orientation show, I get to feel like a rock star, because that's the way the audience welcomes me onto the stage - cheering and screaming. It is better than any drug or even some forms of adult recreation best left unmentioned! That's for stage work, of course. For close up magic, military folks are great, as are many college students, especially engineering types - they boggle better than almost anyone. Women seem to react better initially, but the guys get pulled along on the gosh-wow wagon just about as easily, if you treat them well. Lee Darrow, C.H.

Not to start a discussion on race, but I honestly feel that African-American females are the best audiences ever. They are just so much fun!
I'm not sure why this is. They seem to laugh a bit more and can just let down their hair and have fun with the performance. God bless 'em! |

Reis, I have to agree. the openness of that particular demographic does seem to be more expressive for some reason, and I view that as a very good thing, both as an entertainer and a therapist. Laughter is often the best medicine and my programs all have a fair amount of humor in them.
Good point! Lee Darrow, C.H.

Yes, I have Had very good reactions with African American females. THey just seem to be very open. I did a routine with spounge balls and the lady ripped by ball in half, thinking that was how the trick was done! Another ran screaming form me in a Kroger store.
And Lee Darrow, you have to send me a video of those hypnotisms, lol

I am reminded of David Blaine's special for some reason.

Blaine's special is a good example. The women we was perfming for were simply the kind of audience magicians dream of. I'm glad others of you experienced this same thing. I thought maybe I was looking too deeply into things.

I hate "Grabbers" but I do love skeptics. I do close up and mentalism, so making them wonder thru psychology and choreography makes it quite fulfilling. I don't like making suckers out of my audiences though. It seems to me that the "intelectuals" are the best audience for mentalism, "gamblers" for card tricks and "social drinkers" for coin tricks.

True that you earn different kinds of reactions from different people of other countries.
The reactions, though, also lay on what you actually perform to them. I will give an example on the gender and on the age. A child in the age 0f thirteen, will not like all magic effect -- you cannot perform him, let's say, Out of This World, as he will find it.. boring! He will look sponge ball magic for instance. A person, though, that would like Out of This World would be a thirty and older year old people. Same with people from different countries -- they react in order of what you perform to them and how you act in your presentation. Michael

For example you should carefully pick the magic you will perform to them. Pick effects that require audience participation. Also, relax when performing magic to them, be energic, make them have fun. I know it's harder to do then just saying it, but you have to force yourself and relax, forget about them. With experience of performing you will learn how to control these audiences. Learn to have control over the entire performance -- not your audience. Kind Regards, Michael Bradbury
