Hello,
Looking to get a good Ball and Vase. I have seen a number of them in the $10 - $50 range. I have seen the brass/gold plated versions, but am looking at real wood or simulated wood (plastic). Main concerns are ease of use, is it nice to look at, and 'does the gaff look realistic when in place?'. Example, Ronjo has one for (I believe) $6.98. Looks nice in the photo, but as I can't actually look it over - or any others over - I am looking for suggestions here. Am also considering buying a cheapie and painting it up. Thanks in advance, Mark

You want to spend some money? Or just drool over the most gorgeous Ball Vases around? Check out http://www.jamesriser.com

Well, guess I should have been more specific.
Riser's work is great, but would be overkill for my needs cost-wise. Let's say that I'm not looking to spend more than $100, and preferably much less.

There are some nice ones from Cambodia in the $25 - $50 range, available from Hocus Pocus, Joe Stevens and Andy Greget. Andy does not have a web site, though.
Some of these will take a ping pong ball. But be careful. They are made for a 38 mm ping pong ball and some of the modern ping pong balls are too big. These don't come with both balls, just the shell. You will have to hunt for an extra ball. You can get the extra balls at places like Wal Mart, though.

Bill, thanks - I've done a search on Hocus Pocus for the Ball and Vase, but *nothing* came up. I've tried a number of different ways to no avail.
I'll keep trying, though. Mark

There's a good-looking inexpensive wooden ball vase at Magic Warehouse for $16; see http://themagicwarehouse.com/closeup.html#mb1036
They also carry a slightly fancier $33 model that can transform a silk handkerchief into a ball. I'm not sure exactly what justifies the higher price, since it looks about the same to me. If you're interested I'd drop them a line and ask. Stevens Magic also carries a coin vase that takes a half dollar, see http://www.stevensmagic.com/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=3596 as well as a ping-pong ball vase, see http://www.stevensmagic.com/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=4685 Both are well within your price range. Good Luck! SETH

I guess Hocus Pocus is out of them. The one at Stevens is the one I have.

Bill, thanks for your input! Question: does the Steven's Magic item (Ping Pong ball vase, right?) have capacity to produce a small silk (as the Viking version does...if you are familiar with that one)?
Thanks, Mark

No, it doesn't.
However, if you are a regular customer of Stevens', they probably can get the Viking version for you.

I got a woooden set from(i think) http://www.magictricks.com. It uses a golf ball for the ball which to me makes it a little less gimmicky. Since these come so frequently in kids sets, lots of people know the secret. But with an actual golf ball and some sleight and some misdirection it actually comes off ok. Even people who know the secret have been fooled. Also I use it as a lead in to the cups & balls. So, those that think they know the secret are looking for something similar with the cups and miss the clumsy parts of my c&b handling. Also can use a golf ball for one of the final loads, and it's once again missing from the vase, left on the table the whole time.

I agree Riser's vases are the best around. It's worth geting something like this as you could use it as a living room ornamnent, when not performing with it, the quality is so fantastic.(inner "bits" could be removed). Otherwise check ebay.

I thought a ball vase was a ball vase but a friend of mine had an old one which worked a little differently. It was wood from England.

Hey, check out the Charlie Frye routine on one of his Eccentricks DVD's. The Stevens ping pong ball set would work perfect for it.

mymagic.com has the wooden ones. I just bought one, got it today, from Julie in the forum here. A nice wooden ping pong ball vase. The ball fits a little more snug than I would like. But I plan on doing the Charlie Frye routine and a little sanding may be in order to loosen it up.
There's another one on the net it's 6.5 inches tall (too tall for me) but I emailed the store and they never replied so...but if you type in wooden ball vases at google you'll find them all. John |
