I bet if you try a handheld, you will see a big difference. I did this weekend.
My problem with my headset was my antenna on base (fixed) but the handheld is great. You can hand it to the volunteers also because before, they could never be heard.

I have a handheld and it is great quality sound. However, I just feel it is cumbersome to me and does not allow me as much freedom of movement as I want. I tend to like having both hands free. I can work with one, but I am thinking my lapel mic or headset mic that I have, might be better for me. I am just playing the gameof figuring out the best quality sound for my audiences, while making it easier for me as well.

I am also going to look into the wirless remote for my iPod. I have an iPod mini so I hope they still make a wireless system that can work with it. Thanks all for the information.
