The only thing outdated in Bobo's is the style of writing...the material itself has and always will stand the test of time!

Wasn't that what the original poster was asking for? |

Gilmore, folks, you are likeley correct. I somehow got the feeling that a replacement was sought, not a supplement. If so... my bad.

I like the idea of a DVD companion to BOBO. Let's get a show of hands -- how many others would buy such a DVD?

That's ok JT... I never thought of replacing the Bobo Book, just providing an alternative way to enjoy and perhaps more efficiently/effectively learn from it in the way of a dvd presentation of it..that's all. I thought that folks would use them both together or to enhance one another in their learning and overall appreciation of what Bobo's has to offer. I'm glad some better understanding here has been reached.
*And Clone, I gotta follow my lead here in all this as I believe in what I said about this matter from the beginning and throughout the debate about it...So, I've got my hand raised high for this. I'd buy it for sure, as there are still gobs of things in Bobo's that I'd like to see better explained and demonstrated, even discussed... -Happy New Years guys...

The projects has crossed a few minds ever since the "Encyclopedia of Card Tricks/Moves/bits of stuff and gags" tapes started coming out. Also, there has been talk of a Book along the lines of the "Annotated Erdnase". It would be a shame if we lost the real work left out of MCM, and the "little" secrets known by the few who remain are enough to justify a book.
IMHO, the little details that make miracles out of tricks are best explained in print. It's just the nature of the material itself. Regarding a DVD project, I do have one question: What material is there in Bobo's that has not already been demonstrated on DVD by David Roth, Michael Rubenstein, and Michael Ammar? (Okay, and David Blaine on TV) The Rubenstein Encyclopedia and the Roth series both cover a lot of material, and between them I find it hard to believe there's anything essential left out. Both projects seem to be designed to be comprehensive in scope. Okay, I'll admit no one has recreated the Downs act on DVD. And even if someone were to polish up the specific moves, in the final analysis, it was Downs himself that made the act sing, and no one can recapture that aspect of the act for you. So, I'm interested. With the exception of the Downs material, what would Café pundits want to see on a DVD that hasn't already been covered?

It would be nice to see the tricks and routines performed by some of 2days current performers, like mike gallo's siamese coin book/video set.

(Okay, and David Blaine on TV) Well, you gave numerous examples of places where one might find the material on DVD...but a Bobo DVD would have the most material in one place, rather than having to buy three or four DVDs to get it. |

I don't have the Rubenstein material, but I can't believe that everything in Bobo's is on DVD. There is a LOT of material in that book. Just look at the chapter on sleeving, or all of the Quick Tricks. Any companion DVD to Modern Coin Magic would certainly be like an encyclopedia of coin slights, so I don't know if you'd be saving a lot of money by buying it. There is enough in there to easily cover more than three or four DVDs, depending on how comprehensive you would want it to be. |

I think this would be a very worthwhile project. Granted -- most of the basic sleights and concealments are covered on other DVDs, and it may be redundant to include them, but there is still a plethora of material in MCM that would make for an entertaining DVD. In all honesty, I think a great many of the classic routines in MCM are overlooked because they're NOT on video anywhere. Rather than taking anything away from Bobo's book, I think that putting this material on DVD would actually bring new life to some of the lesser known routines in the book, re-popularizing them for the video generation.
And while I agree with Curtis that it would be impossible to recreate T. Nelson Downs' routine the way he performed it, producing a version of it on video may be the very thing that inspires someone to follow in his footsteps. Coin magic has been around for centuries. How many millions of effects and routines do you suppose have been lost forever because they weren't passed on from previous generations? And there is no reason to believe that video versions of the routines in Bobo's book would not be open to interpretation or modification. I'm sure there are very few of us who perform Roth's, Ammar's, or Rubinstein's routines EXACTLY as they themselves perform them. We each add our own nuances and tailor their effects to suit our performance styles and personalities. Why would the routines in MCM be any different? I think this is a great idea and, not only would I buy one, but I'd definitely be willing to contribute to the making of it as MB217 suggested in his original post. |

What about a community project to create an online library of video clips for each of the sleights/tricks in the book, indexed by name or page no. I am sure that the talent in this forum is capable of it.

If there are routines from Bobo's that you do, go ahead and use your webcam to record them. We might even get Chris at Lybrary.com to help assemble the clips into a full Audio/Video addendum to Modern Coin Magic. Go for it folks!

I would prefer keeping this non-commercial. In my experience as an open-source programmer, successful projects are those that jealously keep their independence.
Perhaps we could host this project on Magic Café. Steve, can you spare a Gigabyte or two ? |

I love the idea of an open-source Bobo's. We might want to check out the copyright status of Bobo's beforehand.

It would seem hard that a bunch of video clips showing standard routines would be violating a copyright. How many coin matrix routines have you seen on the web ?
Dover, or Lybrary.com should be really excited about us doing all this work, since it would boost their sales. The only thing that could be suspect is the index of routines ... I guess we could create some "encoding" system should the issue arise. |
