I was wondering if anyone knows anything about the Eastern Sword Box?
http://www.easternillusionary.com I noticed the ad in the January 2005 MAGIC on page 67 and it just seems to good to be true. Any advice would be helpful. Matthew |

Matthew,
Looks just like one built by Illusions by Your Design. That company disappeared, I don't know the story to their closing. But maybe this is them under a new name? Looks beautiful though! Matt |

It is a modern Indian basket. It is very well made!

Hello Matt,
I suspect this illusion is being made in Asia. There is very little information on their website about where it's coming from. I used to own a "Modern Sword Basket," made by Illusions by Your Design, and there are a couple of significant differences. First, the improvements: the swords they are offering with it are stainless steel. The swords that Illusions by Your Design sold with theirs were carbon steel and rust was a problem with them. (For me, anyway. I live in the humid South.) Second, it comes with a sword stand. That's a really nice addition! The negatives. The original "Modern Sword Basket" had the legs mount differently. They were mounted inside the base, which gave it a better look. It made the illusion look even smaller! Later versions of the illusion had the legs mounted on the outside, like this one does. I think it makes it look more "massive." Next, it appears to be a taller "basket." This may make performing it easier but I think it looks larger than the original. One of the advantages of the original is that nobody believed a girl could even get inside it. I had a non-magician friend come over to my house and he swore there was no way a fully-grown woman could get into it and he was right next to it. It will be interesting to find out if they have made it well or not. It does look pretty good but it's really hard to tell how it's built until you get to see one up close. Michael |

Yeah I have to agree that the basket doesn't look like the most deceptive prop I've ever seen. A sword basket can be a hard illusion to sell if it isn't built properly. I've seen them be a total success and a total failure illusion. This one looks like it could be hard to sell and for the price they're asking it made me raise some eyebrows. But it looks like they give you the whole sha'bang so that's cool though. I still think the ralph adams basket is the best sword basket design I've ever seen. But that's just me...

It looks like the same design that Mak-Magic made some years ago without the base. They never sold well and only cost around $300. They were made in metal.

I wrote to them. Still have not heard back from them. I would like to find out more about it. Is this illusion a hard one to do or maybe I should say is a sword basket hard to do.
thanks mike |

I checked their registration using a whois search. They seem to be in Kuala Lumpur.
The price is a bit steep for what you are getting. Even steeper if they don't reply to e-mails. Save your money. This certainly isn't a substitute for a real sword basket.

First off... the illusion is pretty nice lookin and what the heck is a "real sword Basket"??? like is that opposed to the fake kind? (sarcasm) plus. if you buy a decent sword basket from anywhere... it's gunna be at least 1000. the swords are great the illusion looks nice and the stainless steel legs and sword rack. are all nice. I think 999$ plus shipping which prolly isn't that bad considering the illusions packs in a decent size is a tremendous value.

The big concern is that nobody has heard of these people, they give no information about their history or where they are located and no one knows if it is a quality-built illusion. Photos can be very deceiving.
The price is very attractive (the Modern Sword Basket from Illusions By Your Design sold for about $1,600 with swords when it was new.) Hopefully, at some point, somebody will be able to report on what the illusion looks like up close. Michael |

Well from selling knives for Cutco we use High Surgical Stainless steel for the knives so it won't rust, or dull quickly....we also use a mirror finish on our knives...I think they are coping us.....just kidding guys...
Well the material that they are useing I have to say is going to be a little heavy for those legs....Wounder why they just didn't go for a less heavy metal but still stong....like alunuium..... Well wish you the best on trying to get a hold of them. I will take the swords....if they are made nicely....cause some swords just COST that much LOL Cheers Michael

Well I got an e-mail for the sword box... it ships from Malaisa and it's made from MDF!? also... I gather that the shipping cost varies between 650-750 USD ummm I guess he's also having a problem shipping the swords out of the country due to the law just changed for 2005 in malasia and so the illusion would come swordless.

It doesn't sound like such a good deal anymore.

Their site send up a red flag for me also. I'b be careful. With shipping that high you should stay with a well known and trusted builder.
Good luck Cashetta |
