Im trying to ditch a ball in my topit on stage and its obvious! Any solutions? I know I know practice but I want to do it facing the front of the audience and if you've ever tried its pretty hard

Check out Michael Ammar's tapes on the topit. Volume 2 shows several vanishes of a billiard ball, with a silk, and a couple barehanded. Which topit are you using?

I made my own topit made especially for vanishing these items. It goes all the way around my waist except through the front. I had a tailor to do it and its very well made.

Evanmagic,
I appreciate your troubles. Absolutely check our Michael Ammars' work as suggested and remember that like a pull or a reel or a table servante, it is a device to aid your magic and not necessarily a "trick" in itself. The result of using it too overtly and without proper motivation and misditrection is the "ball tossed into coat effect". Try some wild experiments and look for the motivation of the movement needed to use the topit and develop some misdirection so the heat is off during the actual toss. Good luck! -Ed

Sounds like you did not construct the properly. I cannot comment on homemade items. If you have invented something new. Good job. Hope you work it out.
The topit does not go around the waist, so it is not a topit! |

Jay Scott Berry has some good work on it as well. It could be the timing of the release of the ball is off.

I recommend Carl Cloutier's video (Expert Topiting made Easy) as well. He emphasizes small movements and provides some ideas on "opening up" the topit.

Since I gained weight(Most in the front of the waist area. Think Dunlap Stomach) over the last few years, this seems to have caused some problems. I have never used it in actual performances yet.
I also had a tailor put one in a while back after Cellini came to lecture for Ring 129 or the IBM. I have also heard positive things about C. Cloutier's video, though I do not own one.(yet) Sometimes it takes years before I go from playing with an idea to the time it gets tried out in the "real world". Harris Deutsch

(BTW, when visiting him a month back,I borrowed his oversized jacket and did Topiting a few Silver$s, without any probs and that after I haven't used the Topit for over 20 years..I suppose it's like riding a bike.. ) Anyway, there are some 'tricks' to have it a bit open all the time..-I thought this one out once in theory, but never used it.. If you have a pocket on your left side of the shirt -all shirts have, I think- fill it up with a stack of papernapkins. This results in the jacket is lifted off your body at that high a position, this will give a nice access to your topit..

Patrick Page is a great instructor of the Topit. His Secret Sessions tape teaches the topit well (friend of mine owns it,we had a jam session with the topit "tossing around ideas . I own J Scott Berry DVD and have Coultier's tapes on topits and sleeving. All of them will provide good insight.
Personally, I think motivated movement is the key. Pitch and ditch when coming across body to place into a silk,or if holding out come across and grab the opposite jacket sleeve to pull it back and show the sleeve and hand are empty. Have a reason to make the motion necessary to do the toss. In one of my favorite books "Pocket Power" Jarle Leirpol (sp?) says that one of the best magic tricks ever is to make Unseen or Unknown gimmicks disappear into a pocket or topit. I like topiting for"complete" vanishes of items that apparently already vanished (palmed or transfered). This takes the heat off of the ditch. Things that end up in my topit the most are TT's, hank balls, nw's, sanadas, or evidence of any other hanky panky going on. Final word-- let item roll off of finger tips while reaching forward and up with opposite hand and arm (lead with shoulder and elbow a little of arm-- that brings the jacket open). Get any video mentioned earlier to see what I mean. Wring hands, crack knuckles, brush off something, or anything else that appears innocent. |

As the above posts mention you need to get a video or DVD on the topit. It is all in your body movements. Get the tapes/DVD and you will improve. Ray |
