Bees are very good for gambling demos etc. I use them for some of the effects in Darwin Ortiz' book at the card table. They are good for the top change because of the lack of boarders, but as it has been said before they can make spectators and yourself dizzy.
Hope I have helped. |

Too funny Geoff.
I've got to put my two cents worth in here. For starts I'll go with the general consensus. . . Bikes for reverses and such in general card magic, Bees for gambling demos. However, I do make it a regular point(honestly) to practice and work with the nastiest cards I can find. Now, obviously you can't do a faro or a good double lift, but here's the point. I want to make sure that when somebody hands me a pack of beer soaked pasteboards from behind the bar. . . the magic still happens! Bees, Bikes, or. . . yes Geoff, Aviators . . . it doesn't matter. Regards, Brett |

Doesn't Vernon say to use Red Backed Bicycles???
Thought I'd throw that in. You can do everything with Bikes. Bees are limited but do 'feel' better imho. I perfer the white backed Casino decks (Bees) you can get at the California Hotel & Casino in Vegas... Get a hold of those decks and there's no turning back! |

It has been said already well, but I'll add a thought. I find that beyond false deals, some of the classic Erdnase false shuffles are more deceptive with Bees, such as injog shuffles and cull shuffles, since its harder to spot the jogs. True it shouldn't matter in the right hands, but it does add a layer of comfort.
I have been developing two seperate routines with bordered cards and without. Right now I am focusing on gambling routines and thus am using Bees. If you do the Zingone Spread, which I think is such a knockout trick, consider Bees. The reason is that it really hides the concept of the initial card count location during the spread. Its still possible for you to count, but the bleed of the backs just whipes away the possibility for even the most untrusting spectator. This goes along with the comment from the other gentleman who suggested Bees for the classic force. While we're on it, anyone use Steamboats? I notice they are exceptionally thinner than Bees and Bikes. I like the finish of the Taly's better to Bikes, but ***ed I do not like either back. |

Not that I use them, but the Bee back design was partially designed so that people could not stare at the cards for too long.

I'll just throw in that Johnny Paul used Bees even though he was not one to do any gambling demos. He would say that they were the kind used in 90% of casinos. Also, he liked them because of the concealment if offered in the way he performed his classic force (and I would assume in his top change also). See the Steven's Magic Johnny Paul tape for his tips on the classic force.
Also, the Bee backs were designed to make them less susceptible to being marked.

Bees are tough to use deceptively for anything when you need secretly-reversed cards in the deck (such as when the deck is stacked with two halves face-to-face).
You have to have a white border to really deceive in that situation. For the same reason, Bees would interfere a bit with a truly deceptive double turnover. An interesting cheap card that can be bought in CVS drugstores is Streamline. These are marketed by USPC, and made in Spain. These do not pressure fan very well (they have a crude plastic coating), but they seem to faro shuffle very nicely. (My first post to this forum! Hi all!) |

I prefer Bikes since they're more common and have white borders which can aid in certain effects. The Bee backs make me dizzy.

Okay, a lot of people have commented about Bicycles being better than Bees for reversed cards and false counts, but am I the only one who has found that throwing a Bee card into your Bicycle packet to practice Elmsley and Jordan counts helps develop greater precision? (Why not just practice with Bees? Because the stranger card gives the benefit of the boardless back while still allowing me to get a feel for the Bikes in the counts.)
I use Bikes because they are common and recognized, despite their flaws. Bees do feel better. I recently bought a couple decks of Aviators and I do not like them. But I did so in order to be familiar with the feel of the cards should I ever use a borrowed deck of Aviators. If you ever plan to work with spectator provided decks (new or used), I think it is a good idea to know how most of them will handle (unless you are always going to specify the brand that should be provided). |

I wish they'd bring back Fan Back Bikes. But more than anything, I yearn for a deck of Aristocrats. Anyone know why these were discontinued?

Does anyone know (longshot) where in Dublin, Ireland I can buy Bikes? If not, is there a good source online that can do business outside of the States?
Thanks. |

Hi Pyro,
Being an Aussie, those bonus cards don't do much for me, but they are great for practising back palms and practising torn and restored effects...saves you from bending and tearing up the "regular" cards... Cheers, |

I read here that you have problems in USA with Tally Ho, because lot of people didn´t know it. But, what about here in Spain? The decks which people play cards with in Spain have different values and are made by Heraclio Fournier Co. And when I did magic, I did it with a different value deck from another country (Bikes, for example.)
Of course, if you are in a "serious" perfomance, nobody asks you for this. They accept the fact that you are doing magic with the cards you like. But playing for friends of friends of yours is different, everybody asks for the deck. And I have to explain that they are cards people in the USA use to play cards, and so on. And after all my explanations, and after seeing the deck, I think that the 10% of the spectators (in a "funny" magic session) didn´t believe me when I told them that Bicycle are normal cards. All the best magic, Pablo Tejero
