In my cups and balls routine I use lacross balls as final loads, is there any other sport ball that can be used, do tennis balls fit in the johnson cups?

Baseballs are common loads in standard cups and golf balls in mini cups.

The Johnson cups are just barely too small to fit a "normal" sized tennis ball. I found some very inexpensive practice tennis balls that are slightly undersized and work perfectly in the Johnsons. These particular practice balls don't have any logos or other printing on them, and that appeals to me a lot.
Some of the sports balls and several types of toy balls have rubber surfaces that have a lot of friction. This can make a cup difficult to move or slide once the load is under it. I have remedied this problem by coating the ball surfaces with some talcum powder. Dust them with a bunch of powder then brush off the excess. Just enough powder stays on the balls to make them much less "sticky". Greg |

My kids used to have various "hacky-sack" (sp) balls laying around. Now they are my property.

Hacky-sack balls are great. My routine uses 8 final loads and the first of the eight is the hacky sack. I also like something called the Gravity ball. It's one of those stress relief balls meant to squeeze. It is really big though and weighs a full pound.
I use the three balls that Bill Palmer included when I bought his Ireland cups. I also use a wooden egg that looks great but it takes a little more skill to load it, you have to put it in vertically. Of course, using 8 final loads my last one is an 8 ball from a billiard set. |

In fact, one of the definitions of a jumbo cup is that it will take a baseball as a final load and sit flat on the table. However, there are baseballs and there are baseballs. There are the Mike Rogers baseballs, which were made to be final loads. Or you can purchase "training balls" which are smaller, at some of the sporting goods companies. The Johnson Cups will not take a regular tennis ball, but they will take some of the "pet balls" that look like tennis balls. Take one of your cups to a sporting goods store, a pet store, and a toy store and see what you can find that will fit. They will think you are nuts. Don't worry. Tell them you are a magician. That says so much.

How about a plastic hand grenade for a final load. Then the patter would say "Well, I hope I didn't BOMB tonight!!!" get it, bomb!?!

Those training baseballs can be ordered from Oriental Trading Company online as well. Don't even have to leave your house.

The ones I am referring to are leather covered. Also, when you look at dimensions on these sites, such as Oriental Trading Co., etc., they are not always accurate. They use the dimensions printed on the box by the manufacturer. These may be off as much as 10%.

Diamond makes a 7 1/2" training ball that it the exact copy of a regular league quality baseball only smaller. It is used for training purposes in a batting cage...the concept being that if you can hit the smaller ball then hitting the regular one is a piece of cake (yeah...right!). The important thing is they are perfect for a Paul Fox cup.

Funny story about testing loads in a store. Went into a Sports Authority to buy a second set of lacrosse balls. Of course I had my cups with me to make sure they fit. Sitting on the floor testing the loads, I was approached by the store manager asking me what I was doing. I told him I was a Magi, and was just making sure these would serve my purpose. I asked if he would like to see the effect. As it was early in the morning, he called all the employees to the front of the store. After my routine he blankly looked at me and said "Thank God you are not a shoplifter".

I wonder what would have happended had you just said you were playing with your cup and seeing if you can make the balls fit... which is exactly what you wre doing... and They'd probably htink you're a nut.
I don't understand why we always have the urge to explain ourselves. Who cares if they think you're wierd?! I buy strange things all the time and ask wierd questions. They always ask me why, I just say I have strange fetishes.... ok maybe not, but I prefer not to mention that I'm a magician and being hassled by stupid questions afterwards. Here's a classic example, I was carrying my old suitcase table years ago to a school assembly and some very rude students approached me, harrassing me with all sorts of questions. Do this, do that. Finally this kid was holding a pepsi can and asked me to make it disappear. I told him to go see the show instead but he wouldn't listen, the comments kept coming: Oh, you're not good enough eh? You can't do real magic, you're a fake, etc So finally I asked the kid to bend over.... that shut him up. (of course, my approach has changed since then, and I always carry somehting that's very quick and impromptu in my pocket.)

I like to use cricket balls, though difficult to find here in the states you can generally get them on E-Bay. They are leather coverd and bright red and make a unique looking load. They also come in various sizes as well.

Payne, you use cricket balls? I thought about that, but I couldn't get the crickets to hold still long enough to use my exacto knife.
