Do you or have you ever purchased and performed one of those premade packages that they advertise in the Magic Magazines for School Shows. I am getting my Real Estate license soon and am looking to expand into something that might be able to pay the bills in between sales. Any and all suggestions and comments are welcome. Thanks

Question... Before we can give you any advice we need to know a bit more about you, have you any experience of performing for kids, or anyone else for that matter?

I'd stay in the property (real estate) business myself, prior to your licence. Do you have a good set of ladders for window cleaning?
Children's Entertaining is a profession. Not a gap filler. |

Children entertaining is much hard than one can imagine. If yo are not tunes to what to expect from them, they could "eat you alive". As many have said, it's not their cup of tea.
Package programs do require a bit of skill!

I personally wouldn't buy a pre-packaged show. If I did - I'd get it for some ideas to add to my own show. It's your personality and the way you interact with the kids that makes the show really work. A pre-packaged show can't provide those ingredients. But maybe you know that already

I have looked at these shows -- for example, when I was putting together my Halloween program, I got Ginn's "Monsters" book. Interestingly enough, I used nothing form that book, but did get ideas about theming and presentation.
So, yes, I'd say they have value, but no, I'd probably not use it "as is", and I agree that if you are using this as a back-up, you'd do better to use that time learning and concentrating on selling more houses. |

Are you guy saying that unless you're doing kid's shows full time, you shouldn't be doing it, because that's how it seems to be coming across. If that's the case -I disagree. I make a nice extra income doing kid's shows. I don't do it for the money - I love entertaining children, but doing it for free would be unfair to my friends who make a living doing it.

No, I think it's perfectly fine to do this part time. I just got the feeling that the original post implied that doing kids' shows was a "no brainer" and something you can just plug into without thought or commitment.

That's right I've nothing against part timers, I was one myself once.
But as Starrpower just said the original poster sounded like he was one of those guy's who's not really and entertainer, just someone looking to earn money on the side by doing shows.

Reading ellisd's recent posts I see an obvious interest in magic and allied arts; i.e. metal bending etc. I also note ellisd is a video store manager.
It's just the quite clear statement that he (she?) is thinking of using school shows as a gap filler before getting a Real Estate Licence. I presume this is what we'd call an Estate Agent? I too have nothing against part-time professionals. There are some truly excellent kids entertainers here who just choose to work Sats and Suns. But there seems no long term commitment to Children's Entertainment in this post. As Den said, - they'll eat you alive unless you know what you are doing. Pointstack's remark: - yes, but if it's only a gap filler the temptation would be to sell cheap. |

Canadian magician John Kaplan has a "show in a box" on the market that has a professionally produced "Santa Claus" transmission video. The intent is, during the show, you get updates in the form of satellite broadcasts from Santa communicating he is on his way. Every so often you interrupt your show and turn your attention to the TV for another update. Eventually, at the end of the show, Santa arrives.
The concept is a good one, and the tape is well-produced. John sends you a complete taping of himself doing this in a mall. Great show. But I think even John would tell you that it's HIS presentation, and while the purchaser is welcome to use it, you should also use your own stuff that you are comfortable with. Bottom line: packaged shows are great for your education. But I think it's a mistake to assume you can buy one and just do the show "as is." I'd go as far as to say if you tried that, you'd probably fail. |

Thanks for the comments everyone. And yes I have been performing close up for a couple of years but using effects suited to a more mature audience. This would be the
reason I was looking at the ads for these kind of school assembly shows(usually anti drug and alcohol oriented). I don't exactly have the money right now to invest in a lot of props that might be complete failure since I don't have the experience in performing especially for children. I thought It might be a good way to start. I am also aware of the time, effort, and love of your craft needed in any enterprise you undertake. While I don't have any children of my own I believe I still have enough of the inner child in me to relate to their sense of innocence and WONDER. And of course their brutal honesty. When I was a child living in Los Angeles once or twice a year we would have an assembly by a group called The People Movers that involved children themed skits, magic etc. While I don't remember the exact act I do remember the great sense of enjoyment afterwards. This is the type of thing I think I could put my heart in. |
