No, I'm not talking about fetishes or alternative methods of party payment.
I'm talking about that strange phenomena of phone calls for parties and when they come. It can go really quiet for a few days, - just the usual sales calls, or callers interested in purely what you charge, - then it's as though some psychic switch on happens, and they all call at once. You no sooner put the phone down and are writing a booking in your diary when it goes again. Within a few hours we find ourselves with a "letter list" (we send out confirmations etc.) of about 7 or 10. But try and work out these patterns and try and forecast when they will happen! No way. You can look at the Stats. on your website and see (in our case) Thursday is the busiest viewing day, but this does not mean they will call on a Thursday. Has anyone figured, or think they have figured trends for phone calls out? I think that most entertainers with daytime Mon-Fri jobs realise they can lose out to the full-timers unless they have a reliable and informative person answering the phone during the day, - but this is separate from the trends I mention. When I used to sell small bands for functions many years ago it was always a Monday night that the gigs came in, - but parties? it seems incalculable. Tony. Birthdays are what I'm talking about by the way. |

As a former statistics and sociology student I'm sorry to have to tell you that sample is just not big enough to accurately create a prediction of future behaviour.
You can, as Candini pointed out, make broad assumptions based on the seasons. You could also look at all callers and figure out the most likely time of day. But on a day to day-week by week basis your sample won't be big enough to find meaningful patterns. My suggestion would be look for empirical evidenca rather then statistical data to draw a conclusion. For example, you could draw the hypothesis that more parents call immediately after school and other holidays as they now have more time. The next time you get a significant number of bookings in a significant amount of time, look at what major events relating to families have just occurred. You may find a pattern! |

I am not sure I have a pattern as to when and how people contact me, but I do track all marlketing results. I can not tell you why people call, but I can tell you exactly how many replied to a mailing I sent out or how many from the mailing ended up in paying gigs. This information I can track and can learn from as it is valuable to my marketing success now and into the future.
One thing I try and do is touch base with my clients and prospects through out the year and not just when I am trying to sell them a new show. Sending out a simple holiday greeting can be a way in which to keep your name fresh in their mind through out the year. Kyle
