Has anyone had any success or failure with Dennis Laub's "Informant" which are "thermo-chromatic" envelopes that supposedly turn translucent with your body heat?
I have some but I cannot get them to turn "translucent" even after using a lamp to heat them up. -Thanks, AA |

Martin Breeze is putting these out under a different name (with permision) in the UK and his apparently change very quickly. however, most performers I have talked to prefer the slower ones which are not available here in the UK. I was told to buy one of those little hand warmers (it’s like a small tin with a long burning wick inside) and carry that in your pocket this speeds up the action.

Yes, here in the UK Martin Breese sells these as the Sensor Envelope.
It’s just my personal opinion, but having spent 2 days experimenting with the two samples Martin sent me, I came to the conclusion that I couldn’t find a single practical way of using them. (1) there are very few gigs where I can reliably guarantee whether the ambient temperature will be appropriate for the envelopes to work. (2) I couldn’t get the colour change to work correctly or dependably, and I speak as one who went to the trouble of sticking the envelopes (wrapped for dryness) in the fridge for an hour to ’set’ them to maximum opacity, and also experminted with hand-warmers, a hairdryer, hand friction, a cig lighter and a gas ring flame as a source of gentle, controllable heat to ’set’ them to max transluscence. No joy. (3) Even at maximum opacity, I found that the envelopes were just see thru enough for the contents to be faintly readable. (4) There are more reliable alternatives. But please accept that this is just my one opinion, and I am often wrong. I certainly hold Martin Breese and his products in the highest esteem, and he sells some truly wonderful stuff that you should all check out (www.abracadabra.co.uk). The Digital Pentagram is simply a must-buy. I’d also like to place on record the fact that I consider MB to be one of the best, nicest and most honest people to do business with in magic. The most amazing cards in the world and the famous Levitating Cat.

There's no question that a great deal of thought and hard work has gone into producing the Sensor Envelope. Unfortunately, you have one envelope with no gum, but a little sticker to hold down the flap. The result is that, having used it a few times, it ends up looking extremely tatty and extremely unconvincing as a commercially available envelope. Shame, really.

I wholeheartedly agree with Ian and Drew.
I got one of Breese’s envelopes at no cost. Try as I might I could not get any consistant results. I didn’t think of trying a blowtorch. With great misdirection maybe you could pull it off. I do not know about the envelope you have, but it sounds like a similiar problem, I learned though experience that the real problem of an effect that you have to replace some item for, from a dealer, is if it did work, you would be constantly buying expensive replacements. That is until they are are no longer produced, then you have to find another way or give up on the effect you had developed to use it. For the price of these heat activated envelopes, you can buy a lifetime supply of coin envelopes (which today are mainly used by mentalists and magicians not businesses, At least in the USA) _________________ For those who believe, no explanation is needed. Thanks everyone for the input. With it I was able to return the envelopes for a full refund.

The basic tool for the manipulation of reality is the manipulation of words. If you can control the meaning of words, you can control the people who must use the words.
