I'm sure most of you know I am stepping into the full-time market shortly and leaving my day job. My day job is Business Services Manager for a company with about 40 employees (all office based). I have been with this company for nearly six years and there will be (i hope!) a customary presentation of leaving gift which everyone will have contributed and a speech by my boss and a few words from myself.
Herein lies my problem, I don't have a problem with the speech, just a few words about missing the people not the job, the usual blah, blah, blah.... but I want to include a few "magic" gags or props to lighten the mood. I was planning to use the growing tie (I normally wear a suit to work) but unsure what patter to use (if any!) and whether to make any reference to it and how this should be done. I don't do any card tricks that would work or any other adult tricks at all. I have a fair amount of kids magic that could be used differently for adults. I am just looking for any (cheap) ideas that would go down well on such an occasion. The guys in the office are always saying "show us some magic, etc, etc"... Any ideas gratefully received. You can always just say, "If you liked the job I did over the past six years, remember, I'm Stu Di Doo. If you didn't like it, I'm Michael Baker!"

That certainly works and make sure that you start yourt marketing with the people right at the office. They know you so what a better place to start then there.

Hi Stu,
I was talking to a guy last year after a show he said to me "I've just been talking to one of your old shipmates, he worked with you at the mainentance base in the dockyard before you left the navy. He said that when you told everyone what you were going to do when you left the mob, they thought you were a right plonker and it was a stupid thing to do, how can you earn a living like that? Now their opinon is totally different and they have great respect for what you've done". You may find behind your back some may be saying much the same thing Stu, I know you'll prove them wrong as well, good luck buddy. As for the speech, you could jokingly comment on how you'll make sure to give them a thought on those cold winters mornings, when they're scraping the ice off their cars and your snuggly warm in bed with a cup of tea and a newspaper. Stu, don't forget to use your extra free time wisely and get out those clubs. You need to really work on your golf ready for September. This time you may break 130

Now, now Clive I don't want to be too ambitious with that golf score! I enjoy getting value for money with my green fees!!
The cold winters morning section I was going to copy from you if that's alright, I just want to make sure the smugness isn't too over the top! Stu |

I do the growing tie but at silly places, weddings and stuff and I always pull it aack really short and I ask does my tie look to short? Then play about with it a little and pull it and as your talking to them just look distracted and keep on saying does my tie look to short to you? You end up getting really paranoid about your tie untill it ends up down at your feet. 'Does it look to long?'

Clive is right. Go out there and get em. You are leaving for better things and you should feel great about that. Certianly a joke as Clive stated would be a funny comment and go over well. I think it would work great.
I wish you the best of luck and I know you can do it. Go out there and take action and kick butt. =) Kyle

To be serious Stu, I think it's inevitable they'll talk behind your back. After all, you are leaving what is to them, probably an unpleasant, but secure environment. The occupation you've chosen will also cause much derision, but who cares? after a week or so you'll be a different person. I think I mentioned to you before you'll probably go through "cold feet" spells, and wonder if you've done the right thing. This is a normal reaction.
If we can set ourselves as an example to you, being only an hour or so down the M6 Motorway. We've bought a house (or two), and brought up two kids on children's entertainment. We've also had that something special - time to look at the trees and smell the surf, - and watch our children grow up! Tony. (Being the Café I have to make a footnote of course and say there is nothing wrong with being a part-time professional! - there, I've covered my back!) |

Looking back now Stu, it's the best move I ever made, I only wish I had done years earlier. Just think of all that extra golfing practice you can get in, not that you need much practice....... do you? Best of luck matey..... with the magic that is!!!!!!
