I buy a costco 12 pack (Bikes, poker) every couple of months or so for tricks, and keep my used packs on hand for special effects that might require mangling (and also just for practice). For manipulation, I know a store that sells almost new (sometimes irregularities) Bees; and I work them in real good. (check out Jeff McBride's video on card manipulation for tips). As far as bridge v. poker, I think that would depend on the individual. I personally like the larger poker size for my fat fingers ... but to each his own.

Like Lynn, I too get my cards at a wholesale store. My old worn out decks are used for T&R effects, or I carry them around in my pocket to practice certain flourishes while on the toilet. Heheheh.

For me it really depends on the time of year or I should say season. I live in Florida and during the summer the high humidity will destroy a new deck in a few days if you do a lot of street magic. The cards swell up quickly combined with sweaty hands and super high humidity. I can go thru a couple or three decks a week. Now on the other side of the coin, during the winter season, they tend to last a little longer. I can remember last year during hurricane season I had 1 deck of bikes and in 2 days w/out electricity they became sticky and swollen, I could'nt wait to buy a new deck, but all the stores were closed because of power outages everywhere. After a week they were in pitiful shape and still no power! I swore this next time I'll be prepared !! I pray that mother nature deals us a milder hurricane season this time around.

When I first started card magic I would destroy a deck in about five days. Now that I'm a little more proficient a deck can last about five to six months, with the help of a steel card guard.

Not that many , I just buy couple of reds and couple of blues when I am in the magic shop. I always have couple of new decks aside just in case. The older once go for wrap card and torn and restored.

I used to go through 1 deck per gig and at least one a week. However, I now go through about one a week.
Here's a great tip, especially if you do walk around or table hopping: take a stack of your "worn out" cards and stick them in your pocket. When you go to do a signed card effect, pull one of the old cards out of your pocket and have someone sign it (I got this tip from the ebook Sctoland Up Close" and it's some of the best advice I've ever read). Just say, "Here. This is an extra card. Sign it so that we know it's your card." Then go into card to pocket or ambitious card or whatever. I mean, why do they have to select a card? Their signature is the most important thing anyway. Of course, this won't work for all signed card effects (some are better with freely selected cards) but it works for most. It's a great way to save your current deck and use up the old cards.

Something to consider regarding using new props:
I just returned from the local magic club meeting where several magicians did true walk around magic. EVERY magician that approached our group was using worn, ratty, dirty cards. And you know what, it stood out. When someone is in a nice venue, wearing nice clothes, it just doesn't look good to have filthy props. Do you want us to fixate upon the deck? What does it say about your attitude toward what you do? What goes through the audience's mind when they see these things? "Why does the man in the new suit have a deck that is 20 years old, is it special?" "Do we want to hire someone who can't afford a new deck or clean ropes?" "I'm about to eat, do I really have to touch THOSE?" I will admit, this was something I never gave much consideration until I heard Paul Green speak of it. And he is right. Clients notice the thread bare closeup mat, the yellowing ropes, and the deck of cards that looked like it was owned by your great-uncle-in-law. Next time you open your close up case, look at the card case. What does it say about you? Brad |

I use my cards so often that I need to get a deck a everday day or two. I have a worse habit than some smokers I know.

I usually take them from this poker joint that I know because they have to use sealed decks every time they play, so they have more slightly broken in decks than they know what to do with

Hi, I am new to magic and just ordered 3 decks of bicycle cards. (my first cards)
I guess as a beginner I will drop them very often during practice, so I ordered 3 decks. Do you think this will last for the first weeks or months?
Practice doesn´t make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect...

Check out Porper's Card clip to make your deck alst longer. I feel that this is one of the few things everyone magician *must* own

I keep a deck in my lunch box and one in each coat pocket every day and they last a couple months before I need to rotate one deck into the drawer of ***ation where this deck faces certain death of being torn, burned or separated from it loved ones.

Every couple of weeks I'll get a couple of decks. I tend to use the same ones for different things so some'll last longer than others depending on what I'm doing with the deck. Then I tend to carry a pack around in my jeans to, should the need arise, so they tend to get bent and worn a fair bit and need replacing every so often. I'm a bicycle man by the way.

Quote: If you carry cards in your pocket you should look into a card guard or clip. This will extend the longevity of your cards and keep them flat. Joe Porper made the first clip back in the '70s. I consider his clip to be the best on the market. I never leave home without it!
