What do you think about this subject?
I'm not a kids' magician. I'm mostly into close up, but I'm a bit childish (and crazy ) so when this popped into my head I just thought, "What the heck, let's see what I can find". So what kind of magic do you know that involves candies (of any sort), and might also involve the audience? The only thing I can come up with is Michael Ammar's IT handling of the lifesavers. Or maybe also couple of coin or small objects "in the hands" handling, but that's not as good. *Besides, we all know that even grown-ups would be delighted to get a candy at the end of a show, especially if it's done in a magical way.* |

Chad Long had a great trick with peppermint candies in an issue of MAGIC Magazine a couple of years ago. It was an issue that featured several of his tricks.

Loads of folks produce candy from a dove pan and give them out. I think your ideas are a lot more interesting.
I personally don't give sweets out. My granny was a dentist. George |

Are you planning to give the candy away? That would make a difference in how much "handling" the stuff should have during the trick. I wouldn't give the stuff away, for several reasons discussed elsewhere on the Café, but using it as a prop or a theme is fine.
Chocolate coins can be used if you can get beyond the melting factor. I think it was Scotty York who had a trick producing Hershey's Kisses. There was a trick on the market sometime back that was an instant change of a pack of Lifesavers to a pack of gum. It may still be available. Rocco used D'Lites and sleeving to produced lights that became M&Ms. Vaguely recall someone else had a chop cup-type routine using Hershey's Kisses and a can of chocolate syrup. Linking Lifesavers. Necco wafers could make for a cool impromptu Matrix routine. Valentine Hearts could be used for a coins across-type routine, or a few vanished in a TT... or changes to a jumbo one. Cut and restored licorice whip. Check party supply stores for some of the really bizarre candies. Sometimes you'll get ideas, just from the available stuff. Look for obvious plays on words, such as with Hershey's Kisses. Whatever effects you use, probably need to be cutsie and fun. Candy probably wouldn't apply itself well to "dark" magic themes. (Well, maybe dark chocolate. Ha!)

If you are going to give away the candies afterwards, might I suggest the obvious? Make sure they are wrapped. Don't give out unwrapped candy. Remember and reinforce what parents teach their children at Halloween about accepting unwrapped candy.
BTW, you can buy individually wrapped lifesaver candies, mints, etc. that are imprinted with your name and logo (the packaging is printed), as well as imprinted chocolate bars, etc. Think promotional products. BTW, on the topic of which magic, Sammy Smith sells "Pop Pop Poof", which is a trick with lollipops. And Viking Magic sells The Life Saver Trick. - Donald P.S. I don't give away candy either, for several reasons.

WOW, great ideas you guys.
Though I would like to ask what are the reasons which keeps you away from giving the candies? *And NO, I'm not going to give them away unwrapped or even licked for that matter * |

A routine I do, based on a discussion started by another mage on "The Shadow Digest," and which I added to, is to use a chick pan mounted on a cheap candlestick as an "alchemist's goblet."
I enchant the element of air in the 'goblet' by stirring the interior with my wand. I then add 'earth' (coffee grounds) from a vial; water (lighter fluid) from another; and fire from a nearby candle flame (wad of flash paper). Placing on the cover, I utter the incantation (partial thanks the the giant in an old Popeye cartoon): "Air..water..fire..earth; "Golden coins bring wealth and mirth;" "GOLD (remove lid and pour out chocolate, gold-foil-wrapped coins into a tray) is powerful; "GOLD (hold up a coin) is sweet; (unwrap coin) "But chocolate's even sweeter, and aren't you glad we have some?" If I am working where I cannot use fire, I use dehydrated water (empty vial) and, for the element of fire: DRAGON SPIT (vial of red glitter). Steve

Some people have a laxative reaction to the various sugar substitutes. Oh, for the good old days!

OMG..that is absolute madness.
Maybe, it's like that just in the US, because it sounds pretty crazy to me. |

If I do give out candies, I usually only give out wrapped candies, and I give the bag to the parent or the client to pass out. They have control over the situation, and it makes it a lot easier for me.
