All depends on your personality and the mood you are going for.

ChiChi,
Opening effects have been discussed ad nauseam. Do a search. I'm sure they will come up. Edd

Searching under what? If you search opening effect it pulls just about everything ever discussed on this forum. Does anybody have a link for one of these discussions? I would love to read it.

Let me ask this in a different way. If you had the biggest show of your life.... What would you open with?
By the way Biggest school assembly of your life. |

Henry Hay's Outline for a magic Show:
Fast Fun Audience Mystery Finish So I would recommend something fast. A production to music for example. BUT WAIT! STOP, STOP, STOP! If this is a big, important gig then my advice is to NOT do anything NEW. But, to do the stuff that is you. For some reason most of us think if we just did something bigger or better, forget it. Do something you are comfortable with.

Well, personally if I was doing an opener for a school assembly of those ages, I would want my opener to accomplish a few things for me:
1) I want to break down the wall that defines the magician from the audience 2) I want them to know I am a magician, establish the fact that I do have skill 3) I also want them to know it is going to be a fun ride throughout the show 4) That the show is very interactive 5) I want to get them to liven up and use this as a audience warmn up to get them warmed up as well. With this, I have developed about 4 openers I use now for various shows. Each of my own openers meet the above criteria in their own unique way. For me, I prefer not to speak in my opener. I also prefer to have an opener to music and make it visual and fun and last around 3-4 mins tops. I then can fade the music and do my introduction type of speech and introduce myself to them and what the show is all about and my 3 rules for how I select helpers. Because I have done my opener, it becomes much easier for the kids to listen and want to help out. I am no longer a stranger to them. Kyle
