If I recall correctly, Mike Close, in his review, felt that there wasn't 4 DVDs worth of material here.
Frankly I think this is an increasing issue with many multiple DVD sets - there are exceptions (Bill Malone comes immediately to mind as does the Osterlind stuff - particularly the first set). To those that have received this set - is the criticism fair in your opinion? Later..... Steve |

I think they are well worth it. Perhaps they could have been a little longer but I'm still very happy. I performed two of the card effects last night and got great reactions. The classic Hofzenzer (I don't think I spelled that right) card plot is expanded well beyone anything I've ever seen before combining a twisting effect and a collectors ending. Next to the Ambitious card (Which I added a few of his touched from the DVD on to) this was probably the highlight of my card act. I hope this information is helpful.

MagicChris from what I see , I think you are BLIND, go see a doctor, Sanvert was FISM winner for his Card magic and you are calling him DULL, I have met him in PERSON and I know how good he is , you watched a 2 minute video and judged him , NO that's wrong you should see his work then talk. And if you still talk like this you need to see EYE doctor , so that you can know what is DULL? Sanvert is always here in convention at my place and he always gets standing ovation at the end, not maany magicians get that in conventions.

I thought Sanvert was a funny guy on these dvds. That surprised me, considering he's dealing with a foreign language, and humor is hard to translate to an audience sometimes. I'll admit not all of these are destroyers, but there's some pretty good "workers" on here too. Killer card routine - a worker - similar in philosophy to Williamson's Cocktail Dazzler. The following coin routine is nice. I liked Favorite Card and his Cannibals routine too. The dvd with the linking finger rings, card to lemon, and babybel is a bit of a toss-up. Elements I loved, other elements I hated. He's big on the torn corner (both card and bill) - which I've started to move away from in favor of a signature. The vanish and reproduction of the finger rings is a very commercial idea, and the explanation of this routine was very detailed - I liked it.

I think his version of rollover aces is an improvement to the original version. I didn't mention it earlier but his coin work is masterful and is some of the most visual coin magic (flying dollars) I have seen in a long time.

Considering you want to get as much usable material as possible for your money, I would suggest going with the Classic Card Routines and then maybe the Table Hopping discs.
You might get a quicker gratification out of these over the other volumes. The masterpiece DVD expecially is more of a 'shelf collection' item than anything else. I imagine a few guys may use the Card in lemon but I have to say that the babybel routine is way to complexed for the normal performer to be doing on a regular basis. Having said all of that the fourth volume has a couple of priceless little bits. Jean's vesion of the Dingle Roll Over Aces is a real showcase of his talents and he perfomrs it flawlessly and with passion. The second routine on the disc, 'I Ching' is almost immpossible to deconstruct. had me flicking to the explanations right away. Yea I kind of like the fourth volume too Hope this does not confuse you too much. Hope this helps? Dean Atkinson Ps Your username sounds like a it should be a droid in StarWars. |

I only have volume one of J.J and he sure ain't dull!!. He's funny, quick witted and he has fantastic chops!.He reminds me a little of Tommy Wonder in the way he really thinks out his routines. The deck switch holder is like something Mr.Wonder
might make.By the way all you need is a coat hanger and a pliers to make it!

Here is a review for the Sanvert DVDs.
Vol 1 starts out with two larger coin and card routines that are very nice. The card routine has some ambitious card moves, and then the deck becomes blank and the selected card gets a red back. It end with the blank deck examinable and the red backed has vanished of the selection. Its just a bunch of strong card effects compiled into one routine. Then he goes on with coin routine that is also a bunch of effects and moves compiled into one long routine. There are some purse-frame productions and vanishes and some transpitions including the spectators hands to chinese coins. There are some very strong points in the routine, and you can either do the whole thing or just use peices of it, and it is still strong. For most of the coin effects on the dvd you need some gaffed coins(e.i. flipper, shell, copper/silver). The next few are all card effects for walk-aroud or close-up situations. Break the Ice- is a routine where selected cards keep coming to the face of the deck.. (Perfect routine to practice your pass) Reversed- is another trick along the lines of preversion or inversion. The selection keeps appearing face-up and the climax is just the opposite. JSS Boomerang- is an interesting idea that other people have used just a flourish. The selection jumps out of the deck(ala Daryl cut), and then jumps back into the deck(ala Sanvert move). Its a nice quick effect that catches peoples attention. Lastly there is Cigarette through coin, and I think that the title gives away the effect, so I'll leave it at that. Vol. 2 is all card routines. There are some vartiations off of old tricks like the cannibal tricks, invisible palm, and a classic color change. Sanvert adds some very good touches that add a different perspective to the trick. For example Invisible Flush Palm- is the classic invisible Palm except at the end the the card change to a royal flush which is a nice magician fooler when done right. He has few tricks where he uses his very fancy double lift like in Ubiquity. There are a few interesting prediction effects that seem very fair and impossible. Impossible prediction is one of the prediction effects where the spectator writes the name of a card on a piece of paper, and the magi finds and names the card without seeing the paper. The last effect called Cool Cold is a nice effect where the spectator shuffles the deck and then deal 4 or 5 hands of poker. The magi touches nothing except to show that he got the royal flush. Vol. 3 just has three routines which are the masterpiece routines. there is the linking finger ring which has some sanvert touches on the classic. There is a card in lemon routine which is just a few effects with card only to end up in a lemon. Finally there is a very cool nest of boxes routine which is actually logical. There is a reason for doing everything, which is not always the case except to show an impossible transposition. There is a plot to it, on the search for the signed bill. It inside the middle of a babybel(a type of cheese)which is in the bag inside the sealed can of peas. Very cool routine, and doesn't take to much preparation, just some patience. Finally vol. 4 has a few card effects, bill and pen, and a 3-fly routine. First Psychic Poker- is a very cool routine where the spectator chooses cards which come to be a royal flush except for one card. The last card is found inside an envelope. There is I ching- which is an unusual routine with predictions and other stuff. Its just one of those routines thatcan be interpreted in many different ways. Royal Roll-Over Aces is next- which is a nice touch on the classic. After the royal flushes are revealed the entire deck also reveals something amazing. Bill and Pen is next- which is a combination of a silk out of dollar type of effect, only its done with something else that makes it logical, followed by a pen thru bill effect. The next two effects are card effects that are meant to be done in tough situations. Surviving card is when someone says "Im thinking of a card, tell me what it is," or you loose your break and find the wrong card. There is also show me a trick which is a short and sweat effect that you can do in the much hated, "show a trick" request. The very last routine is a well constucted 3-fly routine with some changes into chinese coins. It is a nice flowing routine, that takes alittle practice with the timing but looks great. Its a nice routine but you will need several gaffs as with the other coin effect. Sanvert also discusses pocket management during the two coin effects and I think one of the card effects for a deck switch. Lastly I wanted to mention that he isn't Bill Malone, but he is funny and entertaining throughout the series, and connects well with the audience. I hope this was a good review. I enjoyed the series and will defintely use some of the items. If you have any other questions feel free to ask. Josh |
