Sinc this topic has been covered in enormous depth in the past, do you think we should have a locked topic along the lines of "Please read this before posting about torn and restored!" ?? Any one agree with this?

I agree with Lawrence that T&R Card should be in the "Please read…" category and suggest 'Dry hands' should also be.
I have not had any results from a search for Bill Woodfield's T&R C (other than George Santos' mention of it). There is a performance only on Michael Skinner Vol.1 video and although method discernible I'd still like to check on the tearing. Is it in print? I fear it might mean a tral through Genii. A much quicker effect than the others, too, and I am working on a longer effect, i.e. one piece at a time rather than the Le Paul version I have been doing-albeit that is excellent.

I'd have to say my favorite is Daniel Garcia's Torn with a few modifications I made with ideas from John Lovick's Reparation. This combo is MUCH easier to perform than Guy Hollingworth's Reformation.
David Williamson's Torn and Restored Transpo is also VERY good! Just my 3 cents (inflation you know!). ** Bill ** Quote:

As many have stated, the best impromptu is Paul Harris' 'Ultimate Rip-Off', great effect.
But if you let me set up, I'd rather do UnRipped anyday - this is, in my humble opinion, one of the best TnR's around. Visual and direct. I am like the biggest fan of this. Good job Gared! Take care guys, Logan

I have seen Unripped and I am not sure if I like it... Seems to me that the card cannot be examined at the end of the trick (or at least in the video demo I saw). Also, the handling is very reminiscent of Daniel Garcia's "Torn". In fact, aren't Gared (creator of Unripped) and Daniel from the same city (Houston)? While I can see "Unripped" fitting in perfectly for a TV situation, to do it live and not hand it out to be examined (or kept) is a huge drawback.

Answering my earlier question re Woodfield's T&R, it is on Vol. 1 of Michael Skinner's Professional Close-up Magic Tapes in the excellent set of four from A-1. I would guess it may have been printed in Genii years ago.

It (Woodfield's t&r c) is also now taught in the recently produced ellusionist video inside Crash Course 2 Guide to the Ambitious Card. Woodfield's T&R is pretty simple and the restoration, well, you can't see it. LOL. I too am search for more t&r card effects.

I feel that yes, examinibility IS an issue, BUT I also feel that visual appeal is important. In this trick, you sacrifice IMMEDIATE examination for visual appeal - but to say that they can't check out the card after the whole trick is incorrect. Furthermore, after restoring the 1st piece, you can hand that half card out for examination. This fooled me...badly. Plus it also reinforces that all the restorations that proceed are just as genuine. As far as I know, this is rare, to be able to hand out a half card for examination. Very strong. Plus, the performance is a lot easier (for me anyway!). The set up is long and tedious but every second is worth it. Nothing is free. Take care bud, Logan

I like Ripped and Restored and have got it down quite well. However, I mostly do very close-up magic (6 or 8 people around a table or bar), and I find R+R is just not practical for close quarters. For ease and impact, you can't beat Torched and Restored. I don't often use flames -- instead of a lighter I usually bring out a glue stick (as suggested by Brent Braun).
However, lately I've started doing a version that has got the strongest response of all -- the Torn and Restored Card from a borrowed deck in Expert Card Magic. Tricks that amuse and entertain spectators when you use your own deck of cards seem to absolutely stun them when you use their cards. |

Ultimate Rip-off by Paul Harris (The Art of Astonishment Volume 1)
Warped and Restored by Vinny Marini (Top Gun DVD) I think those are the best non-gimmicked versions. |

I'm buying the "Torn" DVD as soon as it I see it available; and I already have the tape. The first time I saw it (performed by Daniel at a convention) I gasped and said "This is what magic should look like". It is breathtaking. I've since seen him perform it at a magic club meeting and at a bar. It works everywhere. I do it in the mirror and giggle every freakin' time.
WARNING: you'll likely need to raise the calibre of material in your act to keep up with this. You can ask "What's the best...." all day long, but I think if you're serious about magic, the work on this is simply a must-have. Mike Squires

Torched and restored by Brent Braun is certainly one of the easier ones out there, and pound for pound, packs a punch that is hard to beat.

Whats the best Torn and restored card?
This question comes up all the time and it is a matter of taste and depends if you are doing stand up or parlor closeup ect....... If you do not mind carring around a pocket full of Dupes and or gaffs many of the above effects are excellent,, However if you want a impromptu effect that can be done on the spur of the moment with any pack of cards that uses no gimmicks or gaffs and no palming what so ever and is a flash restoration that can be done surrounded and inches from the spectator then "Warped and restored" is the way to go. a three Phase card warp effect....... There are too many to say which 1 is the best. each has their own advantage over each other. I personally like Fusion because of its almost impromptuness. Reformation looks sooo magical. As does Torn. I am currently working on Seamless which I just love, but on a visual side, Bits and Pieces wins everytime

My favorite is "Ulitmate Rip-Off" by Paul Harris.
I just purchased Torched and Restored and enjoy it so far. But I still prefer impromptu. |
