When Dan posted I immediately knew what he was talking about. I remember one gentleman dressed in a suit so outdated it MIGHT come back in style a few years( but I hope not), poor posture, hair slicked back AND a combover. He didn't enunciate and his blocking was awkward. Now his effects were ok but his appearance was more distracting and took away from his performance. Now I'm not saying you have to be model quality to perform, but attention to appearances can make or break a show.

Did anyone look -- really LOOK -- at what Blaine is supposed to be wearing. He dresses down from his audience by a considerable bit! Thke "street people" he allegedly encounters are much better dressed than he is! I used the word "supposedly" above because Blaine's scruffy appearance is very carefully tailored. As Dolly Parton says, "It costs a lot to look this cheap!" Bottom line: Wear what you want as long as it works, and is in good taste, but don't tell ME what to wear! |

To a pro we think in terms of "The Costume" for ___________ effect (part in this scene). And every effect may get a separate costume. "Stage acts" change costumes more often than "table hoppers". It is just a fact! Even if I work in a business suit or sport coat and slacks, I totally empty my pockets before coming on stage. That one item has suprised every wife I've ever had. (Stop counting!) Empty pockets is just part of being ready to go on stage. Many professional entertainers remove their watches. Hobbyists don't think of dressing for work the same way. They dress for the day not for the next set. It makes a thread like this one tough. We are speaking two different languages. I wonder if they think all military uniforms should be alike regardless of tasks? (Parade, combat, jump training, swimming.) Bob Magic By Sander PS --- Why don't we tell Peter how to dress? I've never seen him in feathers and a tee-shirt with hip boots! |

I can't even get Peter to hold still for the piercings.
Seriously, it's amazing how stuffy some of the people who think they are "smart" are. For example, the fellow who said that he wouldn't go to a place that required anything more stringent than smart casual dress. If you are really "with it," you know where you can go and how you should dress to go there. Putting down people who are your superiors is stylish only in the UK, where it is a (misplaced) sign of being hip. This is only to be expected from a city that celebrates Gilbert and George as fine artists.

Is it true that "being hip" translates into erroneously believing that one is accepted by those who actually wish to tactfully avoid them? Thus, the fooled audience consists of those who consider themselves “hip” and the genuine magicians are those who create the illusion of social acceptance of the imposters. Great sucker trick! Bill Palmer I find your comments about the U.K a little harsh. I don't know anyone who thinks Gilbert and George are fine artists.
