The best coin trick? Well that's a hard question, I personally like sleights, so just about any vanish. I like the folding coin for some reason. Here's an idea to get some thoughts going. You take the coin and you have an extra piece, matching the folding part, you have that coined in your hand and then you pretend to pull out half of the coin, and then visually restore it.... just a thought

The first time I saw a Raven vanish I was knocked out. Whenever I'm fooled I think I've seen the best effect ever.

One of my routines that gets the strongest reactions is a coin unique thing where two coins are placed in the spec's hand, they make a fist, I show my hand empty and make a fist.
Then they think of one of the coins, they open their hand and the coin they thought of is gone. I open my hand and there it is. That's the basic outline. Coin in bottle is good for reactions. I use a tenkai pinch vanish as I apparently smack the coin against the bottle. Pretty visual that way. The striking vanish is also a very visual method but pretty difficult (I found anyway, especially afeter a drink or two). The bitten coin gets strong reactions but has been done to death. Bent coin is a good one. As for non gimmicked stuff, I've had some good reactions off flurry type routines with a coin disappearing reappearing, falling upwards then disappearing completely, but curiously I've had very flat reactions to Mr. Clean coins across. Just didn't work for me for some reason. |

I hate to sound like a broken record, but 'the best' trick is the one that gets you, the individual magician, the biggest reaction from a lay audience. What one considers to be 'the best' is very subjective, that is, it depends on the style of the performer, and the spectators impression of the magician. As Andy G noted, he had 'flat reactions' to Sanky's Mr.Clean Coins Across, and so we might assume that Andy G would not sya that it is 'the best', but we can assume that Sanky kills with it, and Sanky might even say that its 'the best' coins across.
This is not a denegration of Andy G's performance ability, but merely an observation that Sanky has his own style, and that effect (with its esoteric handling) suits him well, while Andy G invariaby has a style all his own which may or may not be compatible with that handling of that effect. What is considered to be 'the best' by the majority need not be 'the best' for you. That being said, here are some thoughts. . . Personally, I think that since money is so familiar to laypepeople, it is utterly innocent in appearance, and thus one can employ the vast arsenal of available gaffs to great effect. I get great reactions with my handling of the Hopping Half. In the non-gaffed realm, I find that lay audiences love flurry-type routine, and copper-silver-brass effects. Richard Sanders has a great coins across-type effect on Close-up Assassin that I use. Its definately worth checking out. But don't take my word for it. Experiment, and see for yourself.

In my opinion the best coin trick would be one which dazzles the audience, and never fails! I have been doing a marked coin across to the spectators hand for a long time now and can truly say it is my favorite..
Have the spectator pick 1 of 4 coins, have them initial it with a sharpie, place the marked coin into your left hand, place the remaining 3 coins into their hand, vanish the marked coin completely, in short sleeves, and show both hands completely empty! the spec opens their hand to reveal the marked coin right on top of the stack... it has NEVER failed me, and it BLOWS THE SPEC AWAY...I have a lot of effects that are stronger than that one, but it is still my favorite because of its reliability, and strength. I guess the blanket statement here is if you love the trick, and you can perform it well, and you wish you could perform other tricks as well as you can this one, than that would probably be that individuals best Coin trick. I like the rarely performed "vanishing nickel." What could simpler? With sleeves rolled up, a nickel is held in your open hand. You close your hand making a fist. Nothing comes near it. It's totally isolated and in plain view. When you open your hand the nickel is completely gone. Finger are spread wide and both sides of your hand are clearly shown. Make a fist, open your hand and it's back.
Does being prepared to perform this at a moments notice make you a complete geek? Yes. But that's not the question here.

Actually, I like the old nickles to dimes.
It's pretty lame to magicians, but I've found out that if you start out with the shell, the nickle, and the dimes palmed in your right hand, then retain the nickles in your left, while apparently putting them in the right (keeping them there until the penetration) it pretty well baffles a layman. This is a toughie. I've gotta go with the classics. In some way, shape, or form, the best coin trick has got to be the "coin behind the spectator's ear."
Why a coin? Why an ear? Why "behind"? It's all a mystery, but it's surprising, pleasing, mystifying, and involves the spectator in a meaningful way. It just might be the first coin trick ever invented.

Actually, I think the FIRST coin trick was the infamous "Coin in feces" performed by the first fellow to accidentally swallow a coin...
While not particularly popular with audiences, it is still occasionally performed to this day, usually by youngsters, some of whom are not even magicians!

Scott...Hey, I thought I invented that trick back when I was 5 or 6 years old.
I did the vanish perfectly but the production I'm just guessing worked out ok I didn't see it. Back to the subject at hand, my two favorite coin effects are these: Cylinder and Coins (Ramsay/Carney) Purse and Glass (Roth) Nothing comes close to the beauty and the pure magic that these routines provide the audience.
