Hey everyone, I'm desperately searching for a double sided blackboard, of the size featured in Osterlind's DVDs. I would love to buy one directly from Osterlind's site - as the board is perfect - but simply cannot afford.
any help or directions would be greatly appreciated, thanks, Tom. |

You can make one yourself. All you need is slate paint and a board matching your required dimensions. I do not know where you can odtain the paint. In the US it can be purchased at most paint supply stores.

Thanks Samuel, I think ill do just that, however, fastidious as I am, id like a fancy frame-yunno. and as I'm not too hot with my craft skills, I thought the easier option SHOULD be to purchase a cheap one.
hey samuel, d'you reckon that paint would work on a whiteboard surface? I doubt it, but its very easy to get hold of a blackboard and whiteboard. thanks though for your help, tom. |

It's probably worth mentioning that with Osterlin's ultra board deal you also get the ability to perform some awsome mentalism routines.
Check the Café for some great reviews, to which I can only add to. It's worth saving for, especially at the current exchange rate!

Masonite, good both sides, 1/8th or 1/4 of an inch thick, and some spray black board paint or even good quality flat black paint (I use flat Tremclad).
Here is what you do... Have the masonite cut to your required size, put it on the long edge leaning up against something and give it a very FINE coat. Let that dry and get some very, very FINE sand paper, wet it well and gently sand that coat of paint in the same direction in long strokes. Actually before you wet the sandpaper, rub 2 pieces together to get the main grit off of the paper this will assure you that it won't be to harsh on the paint surface. Then after that is dried, brush the excess off with YOUR DRY HAND not a cloth, turn the board onto it's narrow edge and give it another fine coat of paint and repeat the above procedure. Remember to keep turning the board with each fine coat, long, short, long, short. Turning it will give you a nice, even, writing surface. Repeat this procedure until you get the desired quality of thickness on your masonite...but don't go too thick, ok ? Then repeat this for the other side. To have a nice edging for it, have a carpenter make you up four pieces of wood with a groove cut 1/4 inch deep into the middle, he/she'll fit the entire thing together with glue and nails or small wooden dowling. Have all of the edges sanded if you wish and put a stain or a clear, natural lacqure on it...that choice is yours. Just remember to have your masonite cut 1/4 inch longer all around so it will be the exact size you need when the edging is in place. I don't blame you for wanting to make your own props, the prices today for these things are stupid and making your own props gives you a sence of pride when using it on stage. ~Rick~ |

That's a great explanation, Rick. I was looking around the shops today for the Blackboard paint to try my hand again at prop-making (I gave up for a few years after my Square-Circle fiasco). I wasn't aware there was spray-on paint for this purpose. All I could find was a small can of Crayola brand Black Board paint and the prospect of slathering on endless coats of paint (and turning my work area into a giant blackboard) kept me from making the purchase. I think I'll renew my efforts and give your way a go.
Thanks! |
